OK who is going to watch it at 9pm?

OP posts:
wook · 24/09/2006 19:36

Me!!
Even though they failed to cast Richard Armitage as Rochester....

DumbledoresGirl · 24/09/2006 19:41

me - rather a cliche to say it, but it is one of my favourite books.

CarolinaMoon · 24/09/2006 19:43

ooh, I hadn't realised it was on.

It is one of my fave books too.

saadia · 24/09/2006 22:04

I really enjoyed it. Thought Jane the child and adult were excellent but Mr Rochester looked way too young.

DumbledoresGirl · 24/09/2006 22:05

Did they take some liberties with the text or is it time I read the book again?

CarolinaMoon · 24/09/2006 22:06

anyone see it?

what did you think?

I really liked the little Jane, but it rattled through the story so fast it would be hard to get into it if you didn't know the book imho.

Big Jane is too mousey, I think.

Rochester is hot though.

expatinscotland · 24/09/2006 22:07

No.

I like the book.

But Rochester w/blue eyes and a pretty, pouting Jane Eyre. Nah.

thirtysomething · 24/09/2006 22:07

casting of Mr Rochester completely wrong! He was too young, too sexy and too nice! Should be someone older, wiser, and far more enigmatic imho!

JackieNo · 24/09/2006 22:08

I was in floods of tears at the young Jane bit. I find that older Jane's mouth gets on my nerves - a bit duck-like . How shallow am I. But thoroughly enjoying it. How many episodes are there, anyone know?

Aero · 24/09/2006 22:11

I enjoyed it, but I've never read the book though! Might have thought differently if I had.

DumbledoresGirl · 24/09/2006 22:14

If Jane's lloks displease you, surely that is good? She is not meant to be attractive physically.

On Rochester, does anyone remember when Timothy Dalton played the part? the nation swooned at his good looks and said he was physcially wrong for the part but the BBC pointed out that he was as described by Bronte and would have been considered an ugly man in Victorian times. Maybe this guy is also right in a victorian way, if far too young and good looking for our tastes!

DumbledoresGirl · 24/09/2006 22:14

It is in 4 episodes I think.

Mercy · 24/09/2006 22:14

Missed it. But I still cannot get past the first few chapters, I have tried to read it several times but I just cry my eyes out.

Wimp.

lucy5 · 24/09/2006 22:15

It is one of my favourite books, I didn't really enjoy this adaptation, too quick, if you haven't read the book I don't think you would get a real feel for it. I'm not saying you can't enjoy it. I was disappointed.

DumbledoresGirl · 24/09/2006 22:15

Mercy it is repeated at a family time next Saturday I think.

JackieNo · 24/09/2006 22:17

Good point about Jane's looks, Dumbledoresgirl - hadn't thought about it like that. Just thought 'duckface' (as in 'Four Weddings and a Funeral) every time I looked at her.

expatinscotland · 24/09/2006 22:17

He needs dark eyes!

I like the book in that she is, at the end of the day, NOT a doormat.

When he tells her about his past mistresses, that's when she decides to leave him, b/c she realises she deserves better than the same fate herself.

saadia · 24/09/2006 22:21

I agree with Dumbledore's girl about Jane's looks - she's sort of plain but very thoughtful. I thought Timothy Dalton as Rochester was perfect casting, there was also an ITV version a few years ago and the Rochester in that was good as well. I think in this version of Jane Eyre they are hoping to get the Darcy effect with their choice of Rochester.

jenk1 · 24/09/2006 22:22

phwoar Toby Stephens, could watch him all night, he reminds me of Damien Lewis.

Have never read the book so am going to watch all 4 episodes.

Quootiepie · 24/09/2006 22:24

I gave up - prefer the one with Elizabeth Taylor

Molesworth · 25/09/2006 00:08

Agree, they rattled through Jane's childhood far too quickly for a four part adaptation (or am I wrong? I think it's in 4 parts anyway!) - even the Charlotte Gainsbourg film managed more detail than that.

I like the casting of Jane though - I think she's good and looks right for the role.

KathyMCMLXXII · 25/09/2006 11:10

Rochester too young.
Jane looks right except for those ridiculously overshaped eyebrows - what was that all about?

expatinscotland · 25/09/2006 11:11

yeah, he doesn't look 40.

BettySpaghetti · 25/09/2006 11:15

Agree that Mr Rochester should look older.

Molesworth -I think you're right, it is in 4 parts

Bugsy2 · 25/09/2006 11:18

Toby Stephens - yum, yum, yum. (Despite the hateful perm or wig they've given him.) Only reason I'm watching it.
