Did anyone else see this last night?

We thought it was really well done - graphics, satellite type shots, head-cam shots, thumping music as well as WW1 music - all the effects that you'd see in a modern combat type film.

Most impressively of all - it wasn't to the detriment of the story. It was pretty warts'n'all, some bits made me laugh, others made me wince. But it was all based on the accounts of the actual people there.

I got a tear in my eye when they played the voice of Sid Godley VC at the end - as it hammered home that it was real.

I'm looking forward to seeing the next 2 parts in the series.

I saw it. It was fantastic! Was going to post in Chat recommending people to watch. It's repeated on Sunday night at 9pm on BBC3 and is available on BBC iPlayer for the next 3 weeks.

I liked the way it portrayed the soldiers as individual characters, which you never get a sense of when it's just a presenter solemnly describing what the soldiers went through. And realising how different some things were: machine guns were mistrusted 'new' technology; no radio communication so a messenger had to run back and forth between HQ and the battle; and the bridges were smaller than I expected - probably because they only needed to carry the weight of horse and cart, not the heavy motorised vehicles of today.

I was a bag of nerves watching the second half hour though. Couldn't have gone to bed straight after as I was too hyped up.

That bit really hit home for me - not even a field telephone. I thought his life expectancy would have been hours & actually clapped when they said he survived the war!

It was amazing.
