I've decided that the only way to watch these feather-light Friday-night confections is with a glass of sweet sherry and a packet of biscuits. Yes, they are that frivolous. As with Aftersun last week, there's very little to Angel Cake, which stars Sarah Lancashire as Elaine, a put-upon North East housewife who accidentally bakes a cake in the shape of the Virgin Mary. Immediately, the lives of everyone around her are transformed, though her own remains in a rut - she's married to an unhappy fireman who's spending far too much time at the home of a colleague's widow. Lancashire typically works hard to win our sympathy as a woman with potential whose life has stalled but, frankly, it all feels a bit like a below-par Afternoon Play, and you have to wonder what on earth it's doing on BBC1 at peak time.
