So what are your television rules in general?

I allowed them a lot of freedom over the holidays but I want to clamp down on it now. I would rather not have a telly as I think it greatly cramps their imagination and ability to play but I think they'd resent me if I got rid of it. As would dp.
Dd1 barely watches it, dd2 is too little to enjoy it, but ds1 and ds2 love it dearly.

I am a very mean mum when it comes to telly - let them watch something like Animal Park in the evenings after tea. At weekend they will sometimes watch a film if one we can all watch together and they both love X factor. But other than that or an occasional video they hardly watch it. DD(8) reads or draws and DS (5) plays.

Schooldays they can watch anythign educational. Weekends I allow a bit more slck but don't let them just veg in front of the box for hours - they play outside or play board games. We all watch X Factor though and Match of The dDay!!!

Rule is - if you're messing around and not doing as you're told, or trying to peek round the furniture to watch TV while eating dinner then it's off.

TV is on now downstairs (I'm upstairs) and the boys are downstairs with DH - all I can hear is lots of giggling and laughing.....think they're playing lions again

oh other rule is - after 6pm (well usually it's 7 when DH isn't here as I can't be bothered to change the channel ) kids TV is 'off'.....if mum or dad want to watch anything else during the day then they can.

I don't allow CBeebies very often because I think for the most part it's shite. I have allowed it occasionally though. I have a video collection of things which I deem appropriate (Ivor the Engine, Bagpuss, Mr Benn, Clangers, Fingerbobs, that sort of thing ) and sometimes we watch something as a calming down exercise or I plonk them in front of something so that I can clean the kitchen....not every day though.

Now the boys are older tends to be sport. Rugby & cricket mainly. Even the 9 year old doesn't bother with kids TV. Gave in and let 13 yr old watch Little Britain (yuk!).He likes Spooks, Silent witness etc.Tend to record these and he watches at weekends. Have stacks of history videos that the boys watch when they're fed up.
Don't think we watch much TV really. DS3 is now asking for TV in his room....but I'll treat him the same as our eldest 3. No TV in bedrooms until after GCSEs.
DS3(13), DS4(11), & DS5(9) insist I'm the only mum in the country that won't allow TV or a computer in DC bedrooms.

helps that they haven't worked out that the tv works alone, ie without dvds

and that they only have, between them, 3 dvds
(ivor, bagpus, sing and sign)

(I don't really let them watch my Charlie and Lola dvds. mine..all mine... )

Usually on for a while am after breakfast while I shower/do bit of housework, then in eve so I can do the dinner in peace, but we have been very lax since we moved into new house (4 weeks ago) but only cos most of her toys are still docked. As soon as hey come & are unpacked the tv will be off in the main.

Don't really have rules.

They watch half an hour of 'Roar' while eating breakfast on the weekday mornings (it's a documentary about all the animals in a zoo and it's fabbo) - then it goes off as we have to go and get ready to leave the house for school/nursery.

They are then out most of the day. When they get in, they put it on and watch a few mins then they tend to go outside or play so they don't watch it. THey nearly always sit through Lazy Town but that's about it.

I guess I don't have rules about it because there is no need - they don't really watch it that much. If they were the kind of children that would sit glued to it then I'd make rules about it (it would be handy sometimes if they would just sit for an hour and watch it!).
