Talking of GOATs it is difficult to compare eras in tennis because of the changes in rackets, balls, courts etc. but I would put forward Rod Laver as a strong contender.

I'm probably the only one on this thread old enough to remember him well and saw quite a few of his matches when I used to go to Wimbledon every year. Bearing in mind that he missed several years of Wimbledon when he turned professional while Wimbledon was still amateur his record was phenomenal.

I reckon that even though he was tiny by today's standards, given the same equipment and courts etc. he would be right up there with Nadal and Fed.

I agree with you grimbletart that it's difficult to compare eras because of the changes in the game.

I wasn't fortunate enough to see Rod Laver play, but I agree with you that he was an amazing player, certainly by far the best of his own era. I think he has many similarities to Nadal, being a lefty, employing a lot of whipping top spin & with an outstanding touch at the net.

I think given his height and physique Laver might have struggled against the giants of today's game. He would also have had to adapt his natural attacking serve/volley style which is a dying art in today's game. That's another reason it's hard to compare eras, because the changes in technology have bred a completely different type of player.

Order of play for Monday

Looking forward to the Djok/Tsonga & Grigor/Mayer matches.

I might have to do some housework today Shock

Provencalroseparadox · 29/06/2014 09:37

Gosh the middle Sunday is painful isn't it? I don't know what to do with myself

JuanPotatoTwo · 29/06/2014 10:46

Just catching up - didnt see so much as a ball toss yesterday and had no intetnet until this morning. It's cruel, making me go away during Wimbledon. Hurray for you lot keeping the fires burning :) Looking forward to week 2, and extra pleased Cilic through. Most of my faves out of the up and comers have gone out (and of vourse, my favourite of all favourites ever isn't here :() which either means my new faves aren't very good, or it means my support is a jinx (rather suspect the latter in view of Pot's current predi ament). Am being glared at by dh now in a "stop using your phone and join in the convo" manner so off to be a dutiful guest once more :) Happy Sunday all.

magimedi · 29/06/2014 10:59

Pesky if you had to miss one day of it, yesterday was possibly the least painful to miss.

Don't forget to mind your p's & q's & be a nice guest! Grin

JuanPotatoTwo · 29/06/2014 11:27

I'm always nice and polite muddled with one or two totally acceptable exceptions :)

Raahh · 29/06/2014 11:45

Morning!

I am doing as little as possible today. I just need to make sure i haven't overlooked anything for ds's residential.

I have matches recorded from last week- and RG even. I wonder if I could get away with watching one.

Looking forward to tomorrow- think the Cornet/Bouchard match could be one to watch.
Djokovic will either be a test for Djok, or completely one -sided, as Jo-Willy fails to really turn up- which has happened before.

Lopez/Isner will either be a close match, or a big serving snore-fest. I hope Lopez wins. Murray/Anderson will probably be another easy win for Murray- but I hope Anderson can give him a match.

DD2 is watching Dora.

Itsfab · 29/06/2014 12:03

No tennis is rubbish so I have cooked.

Lime loaf
Fruity teacake fingers
Shepherd's pie
roast chicken
cheese flapjacks

yesterday I did apple and clotted cream loaf.

Later I will iron. My life is just so glamorous.

magimedi · 29/06/2014 12:06

Can I come round, Itsfab?

I have cleaned the bathroom, stripped the beds & washed all the kitchen/dining room floors. Am feeling v. virtuous. Will go for a swim after lunch.

Roll on tomorrow!!

Itsfab · 29/06/2014 12:12

Of course, plenty to go around. No one ever goes hungry in my house.

I have also done 3 wash loads, 2 dishwasher loads, fed the cats and written the shopping list for next week.

Oh and had some marc de Champagne chocolate that is divine Grin.

hugoagogo · 29/06/2014 12:24

Not sure about cheese flapjacks Confused

But recipe please for fruity teacake fingers and lime loaf. Smile

rhubarbcrumbleplease · 29/06/2014 12:44

Ive played tennis this morning. After an intensive week of studying I had high hopes for my game, sadly I was disappointed Blush

When I shouted 'new balls please' my partner looked blank & I had to rummage about in a Tesco bag. Tracey Austin never turned up and when we stopped for a quick drink there was no sign of a handy ball boy with an umbrella.

magimedi · 29/06/2014 12:47

I would love the recipe for cheese flapjacks - love savoury snacks.

hugoagogo · 29/06/2014 13:34

So sad no tennis today as I actually have time to watch it, but am at work a lot this week.

Itsfab · 29/06/2014 14:52

Don't know what you haven't tried! Cheese flap jacks are pretty tasty.

I will type recipes later.

Have a lovely time mama! I'm trying to get as much work done this morning as possible so I can slack off a bit this afternoon...failing that, I've set the telly to record both channels so I can catch up fully tonight, toddler allowing! Grin Tennis
