I have recevied a bill from Tax Credit saying I owe 1,600 for overpayments. I am not sure how to go about making a query and to reslove this. I am trying so hard to balance my accounts (clear debts) and this is just another thing. Please does anyone have sound advice/experience on this.

You're posting in Telly addicts, you probably need to post in Money matters for this.

hi,,can anyone advise please im at the end of my tether with the tax office. in Jan 2012 i was actually unemployed but searching for work interviews ect.. in feb 2012 i was offered a full time posting which was to begin at the end of Feb so i decided to do a bit of temp work until that position started rang the tax office to see if i could claim working tax credit and explained i was starting a new job hopefully at the end of the month, they agreed i could get working tax credit of £54.00 a week. Unfortunately the temp job only lasted 2 weeks and my full time job was put off for another 2 weeks so i had a full month to wait until i started it. I then got back in touch with working tax credit and explained the situation. They then told me something very strange that i would carry claiming working tax credit for the next 4 weeks and i would get the remainder of what i was entitled to from job seekers allowance which was about £12.00. I said i would prefer just to get full job seekers and then claim working tax credit again when i started my new job. But they insisted that this is what they would do as it would involve more paperwork and this was the easiest way to proceed, they would liaise with the job centre and so this is what happened i had no say in it at all! So i started my new job and the tax office continued to pay me working tax credit which i believed i was entitled to. Fast forward a year and i started getting letters from the tax office saying they had over paid me for that period of time which was approx £214.00 even though i had asked that i was paid by the job centre ONLY the tax office insisted on paying me! Now they are saying they will change my tax code to get the money back off me and today i recd a new letter saying i now owe them £514.00 with no explanation just that its an over payment from last year..they didnt pay me anything last year so god knows where that has come from!!
It is really getting me down i have disputed it and sent forms back to them even proof from the job centre showing i was only paid the £12.00 weekly while they continued paying me for that month i have spoke to citizen advise i have even had my local MP write to them but with no joy. I do not owe them this money but i do not know what i am to do now can anyone advise?? thankyou in advance.
