Lilyhammer

napoleonsnose · 27/04/2014 12:34

Watching this thread with interest. I loved The Bridge too. Have watched a couple of Wallander episodes but it didn't really grab me like The Bridge did, maybe because it wasn't an ongoing storyline. Just got rid of Sky movies so will get Netflix with the money saved on the Sky sub.

iwantavuvezela · 27/04/2014 12:37

Borgen was great ... 3 series

Bunbaker · 27/04/2014 12:40

I loved Wallander and The Killing, but the Bridge eclipsed both of those by a long way. I agree that Spiral is probably the next best thing to watch.

On a lighter note we loved Inspector Montalbano.

BishB · 27/04/2014 17:10

Lillyhammer.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/04/2014 18:33

Agree with those that said Spiral. I'm just starting to watch it again now. Will add the Bridge to the list for when I have finished as I haven't seen it yet.

ComfortablyMellowAtTheMo · 27/04/2014 18:55

Ooooh, never heard of Spiral. Will have a look for it later. Also watching this thread with interest.

We're watching Mammon at the moment, but it's not really grabbing me, but Spiral sounds good and the French will keep me going til that programme that I loved soooo much at the time, but can't even remember the name of now the French flooded valley thing comes back.

DaftSkunk · 27/04/2014 20:28

The Returned! Can't wait for that to come back on. I second The Killing, I wish I could unwatch it and watch it again.

FreudiansSlipper · 27/04/2014 21:58

The Killing I think it is darker than The Bridge

Breaking Bad is fantastic love House of Cards too

Bunbaker · 27/04/2014 22:09

I found the political bits of The Killing really boring. That's why I preferred The Bridge. The Saga character made it more compelling as well.

slartybartfast · 28/04/2014 09:49

i agree that Saga's character is her foibles are part of the attraction. have to wait for The Bridge iii

Not a Scandi thriller but True Detective was great. some would suggest you'd still need subtitles to decipher the Southern U.S. accents.

canutesauntie · 28/04/2014 20:13

I can't wait for the next series of "The Bridge", loved it. In the meantime there is (really good) welsh noir series Hinterland about to start on BBC4, it's taken lots of photographic cues from the Scandi series and is very atmospheric.
Wallander is good as long as it's the Krister Henriksson version, NOT Kenneth Branagh! Spiral is good, felt more violent than the others to me but not sure why. I also liked the Danish series Arne Dahl.

slartybartfast · 28/04/2014 22:15

i just saw this - gonna catch Hinterland on I player another time

LaVolcan · 30/04/2014 07:49

Arne Dahl was Swedish, I think. I enjoyed it.

Bunbaker · 30/04/2014 08:15

I enjoyed Arne Dahl as well.

I wish they would film the Jo Nesbo books. He is one of my favourite crime writers.

FuckyNell · 30/04/2014 08:20

The Norwegian series mammon is brilliant. Watch it on catch up 4od.

Also not in the same vein but the German one on bbc2 all our fathers I think? Is riveting and well worth it.

Sigyn · 30/04/2014 08:28

There's nothing like the Bridge. Its Saga's character that makes it.

Liked Wallander but not the same. Angsty old man solves crimes. Well that's new.

Really should watch Hinterland though, seeing as how its partly Welsh.

LaVolcan · 01/05/2014 09:09

Was I the only one who didn't like either series of The Bridge? The second one especially had a very unsatisfactory ending - too many loose ends. They should be tied up, this is fiction, not real life.

Nor did I like Saga Noren, although I did like Martin Rohde.

Bunbaker · 01/05/2014 18:23

Yes you were LaVolcan Grin

IMO The Bridge has been the best bit of TV for absolutely ages.

BaconSarniePlease · 01/05/2014 19:56

Salamander was absolutely brilliant. A Belgian drama recently shown on BBC 4.

I echo recommendations for The Killing, Borgen and Spiral.

LaVolcan · 01/05/2014 23:43

I liked The Killing, especially the first one, Wallander with Krister Hendrikson (but you have to be grateful to Branagh for making the series in English, without which we wouldn't have had any of these), Arne Dahl, Salamander, and now Mammon. 'Those who kill' with Lars Mikkelsen was on ITV and was spoilt by the intrusion of the adverts, but then LoveFilm sent us a version without adverts and it was much better.

Borgen and The Bridge: so so at best, but I watched them to the end. Spiral was too violent for me.

And turning to sunnier climates - Montalbano, yes!
