Can I join? I loved season 1, missed the beginning of season 2, but managed to catch up on the first episodes via internet.

Can someone please explain to me, because it really bugs me: Why on earth is everything set in the 50s (I think that's about that time, right?) but they have mobile phones and computers. I just don't get it. Either stick to an era or bring it all into the current time.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/04/2014 17:12

Havnt thought about the time tho I thought they had set bates motel in our era but with Normans childhood

Guess would be in the 50's and with the oxygen girl wheeling her canister about

Cars aren't that old ether

Actually, now that you mention cars - they are also inconsistent. Norma drives a 50s oldtimer whereas Bradley was seen in this fancy, modern sports car (Audi TT style).

Or phones - they have an old phone with the dial wheel hanging in the kitchen, but then again use mobiles.

They are also all dressed very 50s, houses are 50s. But they have modern technologies. I am also not sure if quick DNA test were around back then, most likely not.

I just don't get it. I love the show, but this really drives me mad I am far too easily annoyed

Lighthousekeeping · 13/04/2014 19:19

I love Norma's Wardrobe. I hadn't noticed the different eras. I thought it was modern era but Norma lived in some kind of time warp. I dunno really Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/04/2014 19:54

Had to google coz I'm sad

The series, being a "contemporary prequel"[2][3] to Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho (based on Robert Bloch's novel of the same name), depicts the life of Norman Bates and his mother Norma prior to the events portrayed in Hitchcock's film, albeit in a different fictional town ("White Pine Bay, Oregon," as opposed to the film's "Fairvale, California") and in a modern setting. The series begins after the death of Norma's husband, when she purchases a motel located in a coastal Oregon town so she and Norman can start a new life.

I bet now that I've mentioned it you'll spot all those time differences too.
