IM just watching this on netflix. Just finished series 2. Why after the death of his wife is he now living in a really grotty, run down flat? Can't work it out. Presumably he earns loads of dosh and would live somewhere decent. Can any Luther fans help? Also does anyone know when series 3 will be on Netflix?I need my fix to continue.

I think series 3 was only on tv last year. I've yet to manage to cram this inbetween watching orange is the new black but I'll have a watch soon hopefully!

naffedoff · 19/02/2014 20:06

I'm not sure that the grotty flat was explained at the time (although I could be wrong). I think it's a metaphor for his lack of regard for social norms and creature comforts for someone in his position, hence the old banger car as well. Possibly...

But....his house he had with his wife was totally conventional, and quite nice as I remember. I know he's a bit of an unusual character, but I'd like to know more about his choice of accommodation......

Ah, but after the death of his wife it all went tits up...

chanie44 · 20/02/2014 07:34

Were he and his wife not seperated in the first series?

plentyofsoap · 20/02/2014 16:02

He would be on a fair amount, but he could have been suspended without pay?

member · 20/02/2014 16:11

That question has never been answered in any of the series as far as I know. The place he's in when separated from his wife in the first series isn't too bad relative to where he is living in series 3!

Snappyteabread · 20/02/2014 22:47

Not seen series 3 yet as not yet on netflix. Now I'm intrigued.....

Errrr, he's a detective inspector - they don't earn that much, and housing in London is hellish expensive!

plentyofsoap · 23/02/2014 05:24

I thought he was higher up than that and there is a pay freeze.
I am impressed that as a DI he actually leaves the station Grin

Sparklysilversequins · 23/02/2014 05:32

It's to reflect his feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness I would have thought. The only thing that keeps him going is his work, he's hanging by a thread. He pays no attention to any other area of his life and cannot self care after the death of his wife for which he feels responsible.

Don't worry he gets a much nicer place in the last series Wink.

Grokette · 24/02/2014 03:16

He's a DCI, isn't he? So more cash, but he's depressed and on the edge of normal life, like a lot of the people he catches are. As the series progresses he gets further from normal and closer to criminal, or at least morally questionable.

Or, what Sparklysilversequins said Grin

Really looking forward to series 3 on netflix
