Hi all,

I only managed to watch this yesterday and I can find the thread for it.

Can someone answer a question for me please? it's been bugging me all day.

Edith is going to get her daughter and place her with the pig man, ok fine. However she mentioned to her aunt that if there was an inheritance should the father have been killed by the Brown Shirts in Germany, then shouldn't half of it belong to their daughter.

But, and it's a big but, surely he had just got to Germany, hasn't divorced the wife in the asylum and therefore the baby is illegitimate. Surely the baby would not be due any inheritance?

Can someone with some historical legal knowledge please advise?

From memory, I think it was Edith who (bizarrely) stood to inherit from Editor Man's death. I think she felt that she had a responsibility to the baby to go after the cash since she would be inheriting sod all from Downton, all will go to the Invisible Baby (son of Matthew and Mary).

I don't think being illegitimate would prevent the baby from being able to make a claim on the estate, but more to the point, someone should be defending the interests of the (supposedly) mad wife, why is Edith set to inherit?

This seems to back up my hazy memory of it being Edith who was the beneficiary of his will - because of a power of attorney, eh?
