Watching Tomorrow People, disappointed so far...

Not grabbing me, acting pretty dire and writing is one big cliché.

I used to adore The Tomorrow People, dodgy effects and all it was better than this.

Is it an update of the old series?

Pixel · 08/01/2014 23:56

Well yes, but it's also american and I feel they missed the point a lot bit. The original had an almost creepy feel to it sometimes, especially the opening sequence and the incidental music. This just seemed like many similar american series, as if it was written to a formula, I could almost imagine the check list! Lots of young, pretty wooden actors, cartoon baddies, predictable storyline, no surprises at all. Also that annoying thing where they have to spell out everything in the first episode so the conversations seem very unnatural as we have all these explanations about how everyone got there, every special power they have etc etc dropped in at every opportunity. God forbid we should discover any of this as the story unfolds!
I know I'm being grumpy but really it was so poor, I couldn't warm to any of the characters and would have switched it off if dh hadn't been watching it.

I thought it seemed really unatural dialogue wise and it put me off. Like the premise but they tried to fit too much into the first episode and the main character kept reeling off his backstory at every chance (which no one would realistically do). I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to get on with it basically Grin

And why do they all look so smug? Or am I imagining it?

Oh no I forgot about it, I used to love this series as a kid.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/01/2014 11:00

I recorded this, but haven't watched it yet. I remember the original series, from when I was a teenager - and I loved that so much (and was desperate to 'break out' myself, of course). I have to admit, I didn't have high hopes of the american version even before this thread, and now they are even lower. I'll watch it, though, and give it a chance.

Pixel · 09/01/2014 19:05

Yes smug, that's exactly it!

I thought it was OK. Not brilliant, but there are worse things to watch.

we just caught up with it tonight (we being me and 13 yr old dd1) - have to say we quite enjoyed it. I too have fond memories of 1970's TP but I'm sure if i saw it today it would be awful. Tbh i can't actually remember if this new one even vaguely follows the plot line of the original. Anyway, is now set up for series record.

I enjoyed this. I wish they'd kept the original theme tune but it had enough of the original to keep me watching and the way they'd updated it with jedakiah being a jealous psycho not a robot improved it. I watched the beginning of the 70s series afterwards and that wouldn't work today if rerun, it's too clunky and stilted. Wish they still had the jaunting belts though rather than hurling themselves at walls. There's a compulsary love interest as well.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/01/2014 11:29

I quite enjoyed it last night. I don't think it is amazing, but it is entertaining, and I can think of worse ways to spend an evening.

TimeToPassGo · 19/01/2014 17:16

You just reminded me that I wanted to watch this. Never saw the original series.

RandomMess · 19/01/2014 17:18

I intended to watch this but forgot, dh thinks it looks awful but then he is too young to have watched the orginal, which I absolutely loved.

Does anyone remember the episode that was something to do with huge orange spherical things that "ate" people - or was that just a childhood nightmare?

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 19/01/2014 17:30

The first episode was actually at the so-bad-it's-good level (huge screeds of clunky exposition) when accompanied by half a bottle of wine (might not have been so entertaining stone-cold sober) but I am not motivated to seek out subsequent episodes. I have added the box set of the original series to my Amazon wish list, though (and Children of the Stones... and the Sapphire and Steel complete box set... )
