Doctor Who-Is John Hurt supposed to be Paul McGann? As an older man?

Apologies for the stupid question, I have had wine! It said at the end of the episode that John Hurt is the 8th doctor. I thought Paul McGann was the eighth one? Or are they both? I am confused-can someone explain it in idiot proof words.

No, there's a mini episode where you see Paul McGann regenerate into John Hurt. I think McGann is 8, but Hurt doesn't call himself the doctor, so he doesn't have a number.

Ds2 calls him dr number 8 and a half...

here you go

Matt smith was 11. Now he's 12, which makes Peter capaldi 13....

In last nights episodes when all the regenerations team up and ther are tardises everywhere, the time council mentions 'all thirteen' just before you see capaldis eyes. So, although hurts doesn't refer to himself as the doctor, he's still Canon as regards regenerations.
