Apologies- I know this subject's been done but it still gets my goat. These 2 programmes, for me, share one thing in common; I can't raise a laugh even if I try. Yet these are the best rated comedies in the country. To me, they are comedies for people who don't find normal comedy funny. Does this mean most people are humourless?

MBB does nothing for me but Miranda is bloody funny. So if you find neither funny maybe that says more about your (lack of) sense of humour than anything else Grin

knickernicker · 05/11/2013 23:42

No I wouldn't say so. These are 2 programmes out of many. I've adored Frasier, Father Ted, Getting on, Early Doors, Alan Partridge, Royle Family and many more.

I'm the opposite, Northern. I find MBB hilarious. Miranda? I find it baffling and yes, even a bit embarrassing it's so bad. It all just comes down to horses for courses. Luckily we're all different, otherwise it would be a boring world.

There are some comedies I don't enjoy but appreciate others will e.g. Seinfeld. I'd use the marmite analogy for that but I don't think Miranda's marmite, it just isnt funny.

Same with MBB- just do'tget it. Miranda be amusing but is gentle. Some comedies I find very funny.

knickernicker · 05/11/2013 23:58

Yes I know MBB is extremely popular.
A friend recently told me that she doesnt often get jokes and doesn't enjoy comedy so was surprised when she discovered MBB andlaughed like a drain all the way through it.

Just sat thru an episode on gold. There was canned laughtrerfor every single line said by anyone. I couldn't raise one laugh.

I'm with you Knicker.

I love situational comedy as you mentioned - Early Doors, Royle Family, Dinnerladies, Gavin & Stacey, Father Ted, Black Books, Spaced, Alan Partridge, IT Crowd.

I have all of these as box sets and watch frequently. I love the more alternative side too - Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, Mighty Boosh, Toast of Ondon.

The gentler kinds of comedy - Vicar of Dibley, Outnumbered also make me giggle.

So I think I have a wide appreciation of comedy. However MBB is just a man in pantyhose using eff words to shock. It's torturous. I watch it with a Shock face, I cannot understand the pull of it. And Miranda is just as irritating.

I even found that Zoe Wannamaker, Dentist thing funnier. And that was bloody abysmal.

BlingBang · 06/11/2013 00:07

D'ya know, I loved Dinner Ladies, was very funny and really made me laugh. Also The Smoking Room. My recent find is Bad Education, just think it is very funny.

BlingBang · 06/11/2013 00:08

I'm surprised at how funny and high quality some US shows ae. I've never really found Yanks to be that funny in RL.

ClayDavis · 06/11/2013 00:12

I'll agree with you on My Family (the Zoe Wannamaker thing). It was abysmal. But I've watched most of the stuff you've listed as well as a lot of satire and a fair amount of stand up and I do find MBB funny. Miranda, not so much.

I'm not sure it says much about anything other than you just don't find it funny. I certainly wouldn't say they were for people who don't find normal comedy funny.

runningonwillpower · 06/11/2013 00:14

OP, your question makes no sense to me.

Not sharing a sense of humour doesn't make the other person humourless.

It just means you have different senses of humour.

LordPalmerston · 06/11/2013 00:18

Unfunny shit. Partic Miranda. I loathe her

LordPalmerston · 06/11/2013 00:21

That's true about americans. Rarely hilarious. I have obviously not met all of them.

Bunbaker · 07/11/2013 19:00

I didn't used to like Miranda, but it has grown on me. DD and I are going to see her show next year Grin

I don't like MBB at all. It is too artificial and contrived, and filmed like an American sitcom. That said I loved Cheers and Frasier.
