Breaking Bad - I'm a wimp, should I watch it?

I attempted to watch the Breaking Bad pilot last night, but stopped it half-way through as I found it too disturbing. Can't really describe why, it just made me anxious.

I should admit I'm a "delicate little flower" Grin who couldn't handle the Wire either.

But people say it's brilliant, so do I a: press on with it/force my inner wimp into submission, or b: let Dh carry on (he loved it) while I crochet with earplugs in?

It is brilliant. I watched the final ever episode last night and now have a huge void in my life.

If you could only manage half the pilot I'm not sure you could stomach what's to come. Press on if you can or you'll be missing out on something really special. Wish I was just about to watch it from the beginning :-)

SouthernComforts · 13/10/2013 14:50

From season 2 onward it gets darker and darker so if the pilot bothered you...

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 13/10/2013 14:52

I am well hard. I can watch anything with nary a problem.

Breaking Bad upset me. I managed 3 episodes and it was nothing to do with the violence or subject matter. It made me very anxious and I can't quite explain why.

I might be the only person in the world who doesn't like it however.

projectbabyweight · 13/10/2013 19:42

Thanks guys, but I'm just as Confused as ever!

It has a lot of dark, depressing moments. We are finding it really great, but hard going iyswim.

googlyeyes · 13/10/2013 19:55

The first couple of episodes made me very uncomfortable and were way too gory for me but after that I seemed to find it plain sailing! What that says about me I don't know but I didn't find anything as gory as the first deaths

BunnyLebowski · 13/10/2013 19:57

I'm on S3 and think it's fantastic and very dark sided. But that's exactly why I love it.

I'd rather have gritty and violent than the anodyne blandness of Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives et al.

I hate Skyler though. What a moose.

FaintlyMacabre · 13/10/2013 19:58

I felt just the same about it. It was clearly brilliant but it made me anxious and I couldn't sleep properly after watching it. I managed about 3 episodes before giving up. DH is watching on his tablet late at night while I sleep peacefully next to him.

Maybe I'll try it when DD is older- she's only 4 months and I've found that when my babies are small I feel more emotionally vulnerable to TV, films etc.

EagleRay · 13/10/2013 19:58

I watched the pilot last night too - and fell asleep after 20 mins! To be fair, I'd had a v long day.

Will try again soon to get into it

Buglugs · 13/10/2013 19:59

I'm a wimp with these things too. Dh has been watching it and he went 'I don't think you'd like it'. It pisses me off that everything has to be so gory these days.

itsn0tmeitsyou · 13/10/2013 20:03

I think if it's freaking you out after the first episode, you will NEVER make it to the end. The first series is tame, and it gets a lot darker. Personally, I find nothing at all to be worried about, supernatural stuff freaks the hell out of me, but meth-cooking and American badasses aren't much to worry about, imo. Each to their own, though!!
Don't watch anything you don't actually enjoy, I would say. Life's too short!!

FluffyDucky · 13/10/2013 20:04

Oh I didn't know this was a gory one! I haven't started watching it yet but it is on my list. I watch (through my fingers) The Walking Dead, is it worse or about the same as that?
Buglugs I know what you mean, it's such a pain being squeamish!

DontCallMeDaughter · 13/10/2013 20:11

The gore is pretty awful when it happens, but it's not every episode and it's signposted from afar (in our house, dh muted and put the subtitles on and I closed my eyes, then he'd tell me what happened if it was critical to the plot).

Season 2 is completely depressing. That was the hardest part.

Personally I think it was worth it. It was one of the best things I've ever watched on TV - beautifully shot and superbly acted. The characters are complex and well developed. The violence is in keeping with the story and is pretty essential. And a couple of decent twists to keep you on your toes!

Enjoy!!

bulletwithbutterflywings · 13/10/2013 20:11

When and what channel is it on?! I've just scoured the sky planner and I can't find it. I'm feeling very frustrated and hard done by now...
Desperate to see it but I can't afford the box set!

LightasaBreeze · 13/10/2013 20:54

Bullet its on Netflix. Its free to sign up for the first month and then £5.99 a month, well worth it though.

ZebraZeebra · 13/10/2013 21:04

I don't remember any gory bits and I cannot stand any gore at all. Weird. Maybe I blocked it out.

Putitonthelist · 13/10/2013 21:36

There is gore, watching from behind a cushion stuff, but nowhere near as bad as The Walking Dead gore.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 13/10/2013 21:44

The gore didn't bother me. My favourite series is Supernatural. I like horror.

Breaking Bad seemed so bleak. I just felt desperate after watching it.

LightasaBreeze · 13/10/2013 21:46

It a similar sort of gore as Dexter.

DontMentionThePrunes · 13/10/2013 21:47

It's gory. I'm watching it now and there are bits I watch through my fingers.
It's very intense and so doesn't need much actual gore to put you over the edge. Lots is implied.

TheAngryCheeseCracker · 14/10/2013 19:05

It is crap anyway, violent and nasty crap.

Don't bother.

starlingsintheslipstream · 14/10/2013 19:16

I'm in the same quandary. I loved The Wire and figured this would be our next series but I'm four episodes in and found the first three really hard going. I don't know if I want to persevere. Bleak is about right, but then people love it so there must be something in it...

projectbabyweight · 14/10/2013 19:22

Right well I've made a decision - I'm not going to force myself to watch it, even if I'm missing out on something brilliant.

I have the same reaction to David Lynch films, I can see they're very well made and clever, but they just make me feel unpleasant. It's a totally different feeling to being scared, which I often quite enjoy, and it's not about the gore but the bleak atmosphere of it.

Thanks for your help Halloween Smile
