Why so many programmes about benefits?

I see there's one coming up in C4 at 9. The BBC had similar programmes recently. I don't live in the UK so could somebody please explain why the focus on this area of late?

Welfare reform.

Am watching C4 now. Not sure what to make of it so far, so will just keep watching.

And "Why Don't You Spesk English?" A couple of weeks ago

It has become entertainment to peer into the lives of the poor and judge them.
This is just the culmination of a decade of programming, tbh.
We're being groomed to accept the welfare reforms as sensible.
(NB any one of us could be filling in those forms tomorrow.)

As long as not too much is said about people losing their homes as the third bedroom that was lost putting a lift in is still counted as a bedroom under bedroom tax legislation. I know - they can sleep in the lift. Fuck over the scroungers - yay..... Oh... Hang on...
