Interesting family history and she seems lovely.

I just started a post saying pretty much the same!

difficultpickle · 07/08/2013 22:01

I completely get the deisre to know more about your origins when you have children. I thought it was lovely that she actually found out information that clearly meant so much to her.

Thought she came across really well. I was watching because she was at Stockport Plaza.

LottieJenkins · 07/08/2013 22:08

I thought she was a lovely lady. I was clearing out in my spare room and I have found a pic of my late dh's parents. I am going to make sure Wilf has it! I never knew my husbands parents as he was 35 years older than me. He used to tell me about his Dad and how until the day he died he couldn't be persuaded that Hinge and Bracket were men. He was absolutely convinced that they were women! Wilf has Thomas as his middle name. His Grandad, Uncle and Cousin were all Thomas's!!

SupermansBigRedPants · 07/08/2013 22:15

Aaaaargh I came on hoping for a rant Blush I have a real hatred for her, no reason for it whatsoever, just can't stick her.

Marcheline · 07/08/2013 22:18

I thought she was lovely, too.

It made me weep hearing all of her dad's war stories; my grandad died late last year and he had some tales to tell of the war, too. Her response was so genuine.

I've never watched that programme before but I totally get why people want to find out about their family tree. There is something very grounding about knowing where you came from.

DorisShutt · 07/08/2013 22:21

I get the feeling that when she was saying she wanted to keep in touch, she actually did and it wasn't just a show for the camera.

diddl · 10/08/2013 19:52

I'm just watching.

Missed the beginning-was her father always married to someone else, then?

LottieJenkins · 10/08/2013 21:14

Yes. Minnies's Mum was his mistress!

diddl · 10/08/2013 21:40

And the same for her Grandfather?

Did he have any children with his wife?

At first I got the impression that he was leading a "double life", but I think not?

difficultpickle · 11/08/2013 11:38

The grthe grandfather had a Minne's father with the grandmother in 1921 and married her in 1936 so unusual but not a double life.

OP posts:
diddl · 11/08/2013 12:15

So the Gt GF was also married at the time?

Found somewhere that Minnie has a sister & half sister.

So I'm thinking her father didn't want to leave his family.

Apparently his wife divorced him when she found out about his other family.

diddl · 11/08/2013 12:18

Oh, and to add insult to injury, after his first wife, & after having Minnie & her sister, he went on to marry for a second time & have a son!

difficultpickle · 11/08/2013 20:20

No, Minnie's grandfather wasn't married to anyone when he had Minnie's father. Simply both he and Minnie's grandma were unmarried and only married some years later.

OP posts:
diddl · 11/08/2013 20:41

Oh, I'm sure that they didn't marry initially because one or both of them were married & they married each other after spouse(s) had died.

Not that it matters-although it probably would have done then!

tribpot · 11/08/2013 20:52

Yes, I'm sure at the point where Minnie's grandparents married, they were both listed as widow/widower. I seem to recall that Minnie's grandmother was already widowed when she conceived Minnie's dad, but the grandfather was still married to someone else. She died in 1932 and it still took them 4 years to get married!

Minnie's father was obviously a brave soldier but a cowardly husband/partner. I'm somewhat surprised she didn't express any anger (on camera at least) about the fact he'd isolated her from her family when clearly no-one was going to blame her for his mistakes. I felt the people she met were genuinely pleased to hear from her (albeit most of them were obviously a bit like: Minnie who? which was refreshing!)

Juniperdewdropofbrandy · 11/08/2013 20:55

I wanted to watch this as she went to my hometown of Darlington.

I've always liked her she comes across very down to earth in interviews.

Will see if it's on iplayer?

tribpot · 11/08/2013 20:56

Voila

difficultpickle · 11/08/2013 20:57

Sorry, you are right. Such a complicated family history!
