wow. love this timeless story.

read the book like a million times and seen the film almost as many times too!

But today, well, really appreciated why Gregory Peck got an oscar for this. that courtroom speech had me in tears!

and Bob Ewell scared the wits out of DC.

and lump in throat with Boo Radloey. Robert Duvall really put kindness in his eyes looking at Scout.

It's my all time favourite book. I have it in DVD but didn't realise it was in this afternoon.

Gonna dig the DVD out now!

It's such a fantastic film, isn't it? And Harper Lee thoroughly approved - she and Gregory Peck became close friends afterwards.

I watched it with DD this afternoon for the umpteenth. Yes it is wonderful. A great vision of the book. DD loved it too and took inspiration from the title sequence at the beginning for her animation project at school. Did you see the doc' on Harper Lee on BBC Four a couple of years ago?

I've recorded it for DD as it is on her reading list for summer. I did it for olevel and loved it and Gregory Peck is one of my favorite actors. Did any one see the recent documentory on Harper Lee. She is a recluse and her identity is closely protected in the town where TKAM is set and she still lives there.

agree on the casting too. the kids were good too. in fact all the casting was good.

but yes, Greg Peck IS Atticus.

The doc' as I recall was (some bloke, I forget his name - an author), shedding light on the books inspirations, the characters social, political themes etc. trying to track HL down too, he gave a party in her home town with all local dignitaries invited. Rumour has it that she turned up but didn't make herself known.

I would have loved that childhood in that place. Except for the appalling racism obviously.

Watched it again a few weeks ago, it's a lovely lovely film, I always have a little cry at the court room speech. Gregory Peck plays Atticus so well. One of my favourites.

The scene with Bo Radley at the end has me in floods always, that music. welling up now..

it wouldnt have worked so well either had it been filmed in colour would it? the black and whiteness all added to the atmosphere. i wonder if that was a deliberate decision to highlight the white people/black people divide too, on a subconcious level?

it was the only book at school i was interested in and did well in. NOW I love Dickens and Shakespeare and the like (thanks to horrible histories!!) but TKAM had me gripped from the start, and love the way HL decribed things.

I especially was impressed that she likened the sound of fire to taffeta. perfect!

OH ive never seen the film (not sure why) have read the book though I am going to see if it is on catch up

I love this film and the book and was so jealous of Scout and Jem having Atticus Finch as a daddy. He is the perfect father figure.

I love Uncle Jack in the book too.

But the film had just the right amount of sctors/screentime/enough script to cover the book and the whole point of the book.

you're right schmaltzing and they covered that bit in the film when Atticus said ''Tom Robinson didnt rape Mayella Ewell but SOMEONE did''. brilliant and genius.

and Heck Tate at the end with 'let the dead bury the dead' and Scout thoroughly understanding it. fantastic.

Gutted I missed this. What Channel? Perhaps I can get on demand etc...
