It had to be done. A Nigel Slater thread just to get it off your chest.
Do we really have the time that you have Nige?
Does he ever cook for more than one?

leakylils, I am pleased to hear it. I read Kitchen Confidential and Bourdain said the workers in good restaurants got terrible food. I don't want to believe it, I want to imagine that everyone who works there gets top nosh.

Xiaoxiong, if you would kill... and it was pre-kids....the answer is staring you in the face.

whowherewhen · 02/08/2013 17:28

I must say how much pleasure reading this thread has been. It's made me laugh so much - very amusing thoughts on dear Nige!! For one thing, it as amazing the number of comments on here.
Yes, he himself is very unappetizing - very unclean looking hair and not good when he touches it whilst cooking. He should follow Hugh Fern.Whit who is now looking rather better with a shorter style. Also his drawling talk is irritating.
Yes his book Toast was rather good but we probably have to forgive a lot of the detail in his TV program as he's probably manipulated a great deal by the producer.

'Just pick one and be fucking done with it you tit' is making me snort.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 02/08/2013 18:53

Yes, with the herb thing I think he should suggest whichever he'd choose, and then say or you could use X for a more mediteranean flavour or whatever - but surely using different herbs will make quite a big difference to the flavour ? So odd when he just says use X,Y or Z.

You can perhaps take the no recipe do what you like thing a bit too far? (especially when making a food/cookery programme)

Tonight's challenge. Make store cupboard meal. Er. Pasta, tuna, flagelot beans, half an onion, courgette bit of pesto, mayo, Parmesan . Nigel is your uncle. Well it was edible.

For tonight's dinner I made a soup:

  • 2 cartons of butternut squash soup (tesco)
  • leftover rice & peas
  • leftover beef from chinese takeaway, finely chopped

mix and heat. no-one complained

leakylills · 03/08/2013 08:27

My mum read 'Toast' and said it was good. I'm sure it is, I just think he's a right cold fish on telly and doesn't come across well at all. He actually seems devoid of personality.

leakylills · 03/08/2013 08:53

2468BONJOVI Yes we used to get the same food for staff dinner as was on the menu for punters . fabulous stuff...The amount of superb quality, perfectly good food that got thrown away was unbelievable.. Everything from Oysters to Rib eye steaks, farm reared chicken trays of desserts - you name it. All because the menu was changing, so out it went. Needless to say I used to take it home. I'd end up throwing it out as I couldn't eat it all.
I've still the hips to prove it..

Minimammoth · 04/08/2013 15:20

I was fancying a go at his lemon cake, as its bucketing down here, so have put the oven on. Not got enough lemons. One only won't do I guess. Noticed he does wear a big wedding ring, so maybe his partner is permanent.
Another question for all you fans, does he run an establishment a la Heston.

I followed cook books by other people and they generally bombed horribly. Slater's lemon roast chicken was divine to a hopeless chef like me and I was hooked from that recipe onward. I sometimes find myself thinking I'm not keen on him, when I watch him, because he is a bit smug, but then I remember his lemon chicken and watch him some more.... I am clearly one of the fan base.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/08/2013 17:09

Just had to pop back on here to say how much I enjoyed watching Nigel cook, chat, and eat with actor Denis Lawson on "A taste of my life" this afternoon.

I think this is his kind of programme, no proper recipes, some good company, and just a lovely combination of food and life.

He's even had his hair cut ! I wondered if he'd seen this thread Smile

Have you read one of his cook books? His writing is just as annoying as his speaking Angry He is so full of himself!

diddl · 09/08/2013 13:56

"A Taste of My Lfe" is a few years old, isn't it?

Unless there's a new series?

"I have one Nigel Slater book - a diary-ish one - and you're right that there are hardly any recipes - just smug "I ate one perfect tomato on a slice of sourdough with a drizzle of artisan olive oil from Sicily".

What else did you eat Nigel? Did you go down the chippy after that?"

Begginyouformercy · 10/08/2013 14:20

I had the misfortune to catch a couple of minutes of his leftovers programme last night. Oh god, those pauses

VestaCurry · 10/08/2013 14:27

Have one of his early cookbooks which is great and I love 'Toast', but in these days of austerity his recent tv shows leave me feeling on a right downer.
