Its only been on five mins and got my back up already. This landlord wants to turn a three bedroom house into six studio flats. And charging 90 quid a week for one room in a shared house. And the state of some of the places they rent out. Shock

OP posts:
delboysfileofax · 18/07/2013 22:48

Greedy bastards the lot of them. If I was chief of the world I would make it the law that persons can't own more than two properties. That guys rooms were complete dumps. £90 a week?? Angry

LadyMaryQuiteContrary · 18/07/2013 22:49

Is this a programme about benefit claimants who don't pay their rent? Confused

MildredIsMyAlterEgo · 18/07/2013 23:04

Oh that poor lady with breast cancer, as if she hasn't got enough to deal with Sad

50BalesOfHay · 18/07/2013 23:05

Don't rent if you don't like landlords, buy instead. We are not all greedy bastards, any more than all tenants are lazy twats.

rocket74 · 18/07/2013 23:06

What a horrible man that Jim. If he made better bedsits/studios then people wouldn't feel so penned in and angry at their situations. I hope all his skanky rooms get trashed.
I can't believe no one can help the young with cancer - being a tenant is so shit and you are always vulnerable to the whims of a landlord.

FunnysInLaJardin · 18/07/2013 23:07

I would not be a resi landlord for all the tea in china. One big headache

rocket74 · 18/07/2013 23:08

yes 50balesofHay we all have the means and ability to buy. What dumbfucks all us tenants are. A truly enlightened response.

maja00 · 18/07/2013 23:08

Oh yes of course! Poor people should just buy houses!

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 18/07/2013 23:09

Surely there is good and bad on both sides?

I am a tenant. I'm not proud. I know people look down on us because we can't afford to buy our own home but we are good tenants. We pay our rent on time and we look after our home as if it were our own.

maja00 · 18/07/2013 23:11

Feel so sorry for the mum with cancer - horrible to have to wait until the bailiffs turn up.

What we need really is a massive increase in social housing and taking some of this power from greedy landlords.

rocket74 · 18/07/2013 23:11

we are brilliant tenants who just want a stable home for our family. We can't afford to buy, but where we live now within 3 days our landlord came round to say it would probably be up for sale within the year!!
We want a longterm stability and you just don't get this.
Must look under my bed for 50 bales of cash I must surely have stashed away that I've forgotten about :)

delboysfileofax · 18/07/2013 23:15

If people could buy they wouldn't rent would they 50bales? But you know houses are expensive because of fucking buy to let landlords. and yes they are greedy bastards, every last one of them

50BalesOfHay · 19/07/2013 00:11

So I'm a greedy bastard just because I'm a landlord? Not all landlords arr greedy, and not all tenants are reasonable. Unless everyone is going to buy then landlords are necessaryo

GoodTouchBadTouch · 19/07/2013 07:04

Hilarious. You down and outs who cant buy really believe every single landlord is a twat? We are doing you people a favour because you cant all get a council house. Sorry if we profit from it! What do you suggest? That we let the houses for free? Are you honestly saying you would? Buying to let is a legitimate business venture that contributes to the economy, and provides housing to people who have bad credit, or cant manage to save a deposit.

OnTheNingNangNong · 19/07/2013 07:12

Wow. I watched the programme last night and through the Jim came across as a vile and a typical slum landlord.

Good touch. No not all landlords are twats, just like tenants are not all down and outs. Hmm

GoodTouchBadTouch · 19/07/2013 07:22

Exactly. I didn't see the show, but they are probably focussing on the landlords who ARE twats.

The posts above insist ALL landlords are twats, which is ridiculous

ruby29 · 19/07/2013 07:29

Goodtouch , I can understand you may be insulted by the comments re landlords above. Clearly such generalisations are unlikely to be true!

I am insulted by being referred to as "down and out" !
Equally ridiculous generalisation!

delboysfileofax · 19/07/2013 07:29

So it would appear landlords are dumb as well as greedy. How are buy to let properties doing us a favour? You can't see how that pushes house prices up at all?

delboysfileofax · 19/07/2013 07:31

By the way of course I'm not suggesting letting it for free. I'm stating it just shouldn't be allowed. Buy to let should be banned outright

easy they'd be able to afford to buy!

OnTheNingNangNong · 19/07/2013 07:48

They didn't focus on the twat landlords, just one mega-idiot, a few landlords who had rented out their homes (amd the convoluted process to remove the tenants) and a few HB tenants. Including one who had a child and was going through canver treatment and was forced into going to be evicted before the council would help house her, as there wasn't anyone who would take HB tenants because of the stigma.

GoodTouchBadTouch · 19/07/2013 07:49

Ruby - of course all tenants aren't down and outs. I was just trying to make a point to delboy who insists all landlords are twats. I don't think all tenants are anything, because that would make me a fool

Choccywoccydodah · 19/07/2013 07:53

We are LLs full time and we multllet. We watched that last night and what he was making into bed sits was absolutely ridiculous!! They were tiny! We just rent the rooms that are already in the house when we buy them.

We currently own 11 properties. Our rent has gone DOWN over the last 5 years and you all know how much bills have risen so per house we are about £300 worse off. However, we believe we are fair and reasonable LLs.
We have fantastic tenants, and we do give a bit of time if tenants get themselves into a bit of money troubles, but we can't be expected to carry the cost forever and eventually they are asked to leave, and they do. Due to us being very approachable, our tenants are very honest and we always try to help them into work, or even give them work to pay off their debt (painting, cleaning, cutting lawns etc).

That programme last night made out that all tenants are non paying wankers, and that simply is not the case.m it did however highlight what we potentially have to deal with.
This is a job like any other and it's not all easy. Yes. We've just had 6 months 'off'; houses were sound, no one moved etc and it was lovely, but when we do work, we bloody work hard!

It is also extremely expensive to maintain a house. If the boiler goes WE pay, if the roof leaks WE pay, if the carpets get damaged or mark WE pay, you get the idea. Yes, when you (sole) let, yo are potentially paying the mortgage equivalent, but you have none of the costs.
If buy to let's we're limited, the people renting wouldn't have anywhere to live. As some of you have said, it's expensive to buy and can't afford it, therefore have to rent. If there were less buy to let's out there, you'd be paying a hell of a lot more as they'd be more tenant competition.

We're not all money grabbing bastards, we're just normal people who invested their money in an area that paid off. My dh worked his area off when he left school in 1992, doing an apprenticeship he hated. He started with £13000 that he saved over 5 years, his first house was £46000.
Our portfolio is approximately £1.4m.

Choccywoccydodah · 19/07/2013 07:55

*arse off not area!
