DATES - Channel 4

Anyone watching Dates on Channel 4 - some of the stories are preposterous but I'm really enjoying them - especially now they are linking up and we are seeing some of my favourite charcaters again. Oona Chaplain and Gemma Chan are just so beautiful. It was disturbing to see "Ellie" in last night's one as she used to be so young in the first series of Tracy Beaker .

I love the depth the conversations go into. The characters really develop and you learn more about them as it goes on.

whatkungfuthat · 21/06/2013 15:26

I have recorded them and only watched the first two so far. The second one was surprising, looking forward to the others.

Last nights was funny, Although you'd never want to meet a Callum irl, I'm surprised she didn't pull him up on his blatant racism.

Being wrestled to the ground was funny though 'Zero Tolerance-Never surrender!!'

whatkungfuthat · 26/06/2013 12:38

I love how it starts out cringy but gets better as it goes along

OctopusPete8 · 26/06/2013 16:31

I love the way he stood up for her at the end.

TreeMonkey · 27/06/2013 11:38

I'm loving this series. The first awkward parts of a date are brilliant, and just as how I remembered them when I was internet dating - oh the cringe!

Zero tolerance, let's get drunk - brilliant!

whatkungfuthat · 27/06/2013 13:11

I didn't like the woman character in last night's with Ben Chaplin

2rebecca · 27/06/2013 19:28

No me neither but the series is great

OctopusPete8 · 28/06/2013 10:06

I don't like Mia either, 2 men fighting over someone who already has a huge opinion of herself, eugh , I like Jenny.

OctopusPete8 · 28/06/2013 10:07

Even if she is a Kleptomaniac lol

janesnowdon1 · 28/06/2013 11:35

Loved the Callum episode (yes I too was surprised at that his blatant racist remarks were not challenged)

Disliked the Ben Chaplin episode the most - very weak and I too didn't take to the blonde woman.

Can't wait to see the next Jenny episode with Moriarity from Sherlock

Agree that if Mia wasn't so beautiful the men wouldn't look twice at her as she seems arrogant, dysfunctional and hard work. All conversations with her are very stilted. Any bloke going out with her can't complain that he didn't know what he was letting himself in for. She's only likely to attract men who just want sex and like playing mind games themselves.
Of the women I'd go out with Morgana, sexy and straight forward.
The bloke Mia went out with first is the best of a bad bunch of blokes, why have they made the women more attractive than the men? The doctor is the only good looking one and he's a pillock.

whatkungfuthat · 28/06/2013 14:12

I thought it was quite clever how they made Callum as racist as hell but tolerant of her sexuality. I wonder if the waitress from the last one is going to reappear and whether Callum will end up with the girl from Tracy Beaker?

janesnowdon1 · 28/06/2013 22:16

whatkungfu - I thought the waitress was also significant. I thought perhaps she was going to end up going out with Stephen, she seemed quite interested in him but it wasn't to be.

I liked Ellie (Justine from Tracey Beaker) felt very sorry for her having to get the bus home all alone in the rain.

My older teens who watch the show with me looked at the "dating profiles" for each character on the CH4 site and noticed that you can buy e- books giving a backstory for each person. Interesting idea for generating some money ?

Am really enjoying it so far but really confused that everyone seems to like the Jenny episode Confused very dull thought.
Loved the chemistry between David and Mia.

whatkungfuthat · 29/06/2013 10:13

My favourite episode so far was the Callum one. Is Jenny Sheridan Smith? The banker guy was well cast I thought, I've met a few like that (although not in those circs!)

OctopusPete8 · 29/06/2013 12:29

I think Mia's too much of a caricature, a lot of prostitutes don't look like Mia and end up being exploited rather than having 2 men (one pretty decent and one thinks a lot of himself good job etc) fighting over her like a prize.I felt maybe they could have done a more realistic portrayal of an ex WG trying to make a normal life for herself.

I liked Ellie felt sorry for her at the end,

janesnowdon1 · 04/07/2013 09:32

Enjoyed the penultimate one with Sheridan Smith and Irish "Moriarty"- very funny. Callum one still my fave. I was disappointed by the final episode with Mia/David/Stephen - still don't know enough backstory - how does she afford her fabulous flat? Seems she just slept with the odd random guy for money to be "different". I felt she had better chemistry and was more suited to Stephen than David in the end.

Still - I enjoyed the series- would have liked more - perhaps they could have followed Ellie and Callum who were great characters.

i don't like mia, but oona chaplin is gorgeous!

i liked the sheridan smith/moriarty one too.

whatkungfuthat · 04/07/2013 12:56

I thought that David should have ended up with Sheridan Smith, Callum with the girl from Tracey Beaker and Mia with Stephen. It was really about them sorting out their issues though wasn't it?

Mia did the escort work when she was a student I think. She mentioned a business partner last night so presumably whatever she does now is lucrative.

2rebecca · 04/07/2013 14:14

I felt sorry for all these kids who were being mucked about whilst their fathers prioritised their sex lives.

nipersvest · 04/07/2013 16:19

that's life though isn't it? and it's not just fathers, my sil has broken all the internet dating rules and brought blokes back to her house on the first date with her 3 dc's there.
