I watched it last night (Thurs) SNORTING MY SILLY HEAD OFF during the entire programme ... until it got to the last 5 minutes when they described the earlier history of the people who were featured.

Without 'spoiling' the programme to those who haven't watched it yet, I could see why those people were using 'alien abduction' as a way of escapism - even though they genuinely believed the 'alien' aspect of their lives.

I loved the 'bonkers' aspect of it though

All mentally ill IMO - didn't watch it all, it bored me.

I agree with scottishmummy, those people didn't have to be/don't appear to be mentally ill (but how would we know?) - they just had some rather bizarre beliefs which, I think, were connected to other aspects of their lives.

I thought mental illness of some sort was fairly likely actually. Of course possession of bizarre belief does not = MH issues.
Believing aliens exist is a bizarre belief but believing you are visited/abducted/experimented on by aliens is delusional. Huge difference.

eg plenty folk believe in mediums/spirituality but aren't classified mentally ill
it's the nature and degree,impact of beliefs upon behaviour/mood that determine if mental illness

Believing in aliens does not indicate mental illness but fully believing that you interact with aliens probably does.
