Please,help me find this war time drama?

Hi. I am sure that I haven't imagined this programme. It was on in the last 10/15 years, although I think probably the last 10.
It was a wartime drama, againI think only 2 episodes. It was set in England, RAF pilots.... and at the very end it showed the actor married to one of the girls in it, but they were old and in our day. Sitting on a bench in a village, and he looked up at a plane flying overhead. Main guy was blonde....
Grrrr, driving me nuts! My elderly dad would love it. Anyone any ideas? Thanks.
