and the rest of them to be honest. Can't say I like any of the characters and I think the acting is EIT wooden or obvious in an amateur dramatic way.

OP posts:
LadyClariceCannockMonty · 05/03/2013 11:03

Marking place but haven't read whole thread as I'm only up to the seance episode. Even though it was quite shark-jumpingly outrageous.

I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Blush LOVE Lady Mae 'You've brought spatchcocked quail into my living room? With my reputation?' Grin Love her outfits as well.

Henri is so hilariously French but surely he should be gay?

Going against the tide here but I love Agnes and think her acting is ace.

Enjoying the cliched bohemian young artist, probably because I wouldn't mind someone like that sweeping me off my feet.

Am even quite liking Jeremy Piven, but then I've never seen Entourage so he has no 'baggage' for me.

MissMogwi · 05/03/2013 11:12

I was shouting at the telly, telling Mrs S to jump the gorgeous artist. She didn't listen of course and now he's gone all stalkery. Hmm

Is young Doris going to get engaged to the older miserable guy? Miss Wotsit off accessories will not be happy.

MissMogwi · 05/03/2013 11:13

I'm loving Jeremy Piven too, with his lovely white teef. Brightens up my Sunday evenings he does.

ppeatfruit · 05/03/2013 11:46

ladyClarice Glad to see we have the same taste again Grin though as you can tell from the thread title we're in the minority. Yes I like Aggie as well she's lovely. Also the outrageous camping of Kathleen Kelly as Lady Mae despite her rather obvious wigs. I notice that LORD Loxley hasn't appeared yet.

What about that bit of subtitled french that 'he who should be gay' and the new girl in the tie spoke (the french was spoken so fast that even DH, who speaks good french couldn't understand it Grin). Sorry you haven't got to that bit yet have you?

MissMogwi I agree about the artist he can paint me any day Grin and Jeremy Piven is fun if a little OTT Grin.

Talisin · 05/03/2013 11:47

Henri is so hilariously French but surely he should be gay?

According to Andrew Davies, Henri was supposed to be gay - right up to the point when he actually met Gregory Fitoussi Smile

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 05/03/2013 11:49

Hello ppeat! Yep, telly sisters again Grin.

I think the arrangement Lady Mae has with her husband is that 'He is generally in the country, and I am generally in London.' Which obviously means she can have all the fun/glamour/young lovers she likes Grin. Would love a flashback to her in her Gaiety Girl days.

No, haven't seen that French bit yet but I'm looking forward to it now!

BOF · 05/03/2013 11:53

I'm not convinced that a respectable young woman like Agnes would have jumped into bed with a bloke like that, tbh. It was pretty taboo.

ppeatfruit · 05/03/2013 12:02

Lady Did you read the link about the nudie twins who appear later in the series! Hilarious Grin.

MissMogwi · 05/03/2013 12:13

Yy Bof she didn't take much convincing did she.

Although he would have had me at bonjour.

Grin
limitedperiodonly · 05/03/2013 12:14

I think that BOF. Miss Bunting's life was ruined and she just pinched some material.

Social control and the way people lived on top of each other and expected to know everything about their neighbours would constrain everything you did.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 05/03/2013 12:38

ppeat, have glanced at it ? fab! Will read properly over lunch. MUST work now though

ppeatfruit · 05/03/2013 13:25

Yes Bof like limited I was surprised that not only is Aggie sleeping with him she told Ms Ravilious that she didn't love him. A bit of mistake by the S.W's IMO (because the fear of pregnancy and V.D.s was huge then) more like a young woman of around our times Grin

Fiderer · 05/03/2013 17:28

I thought that about Agnes. One minute it was girlish looks and a daring scarf, now she's often nearly late for work because she can't get out of bed with Henri.

Hair is a good indicator in this series:

  • Rosalie got to scaffold hers up because she's now a Young Lady
  • Ellen Love's was down and straggly because she tried to overdose
  • Agnes's had a stray libidinous wisp after another night with Henri
  • Rose's always looks softer and suits her better (less like fake nest) because she's soft and long-suffering
ppeatfruit · 06/03/2013 08:42

Yeah good thought Fiderer And Lady's Mae's is a huge camp bird's nest!! The make up girls must be having fun doing it!

ppeatfruit · 06/03/2013 08:43

Oh and they stuck it to her boobs when in bed with strapping waiter Grin

Fiderer · 06/03/2013 10:21

Rose's dresses/outfits need a bit more colour imo but I suppose that's how they were - I like the slim waist look

Never seen Jeremy Piven in anything before. He looks to me like he was born to play Selfridge. Aged 3 "Here are my toys. Buy from me what you want!"

ppeatfruit · 06/03/2013 11:07

You wouldn't like the corsets they had to wear for that look it was the S shape (pushed you forward in front and back at the back IFYSWIM!! Totally unnatural and vile and likely to kill you Shock it was the last age of the corset, things got much better from 1914 onwards TG. IKWYM about Jeremy Piven and Selfridge he clearly enjoys the role Grin

atthewelles · 06/03/2013 13:55

Its okay but not brilliant. I find Agnes very annoying. She's obviously meant to be quite artistic but she just comes across as sensible and dull and I cannot imagine a gorgeous interesting and slightly unconventional guy like Henri would be interested in her.

I too was surprised to see her jump into bed with him so readily. That would have been a huge decision for a girl a hundred years ago; there would have been massive moral considerations as well as the fear of becoming pregnant which would probably have seen her out on the streets and homeless.

ppeatfruit · 06/03/2013 14:00

Blimey atthewelles Any bloke IMO and E wouldn't turn their nose up at a pretty girl like Agnes esp. with what she offered Grin.

But I agree that in those days she would 've held out for a wedding before doing 'it'.(or at least put up some resistance).

RedPencils · 07/03/2013 09:14

I was a bit surprised at how quickly Agnes jumped into bed with Mr Frenchie. Can't say I blame her tbh, but surely they were a bit more restrained in the olden days.
Love Lady Mae and the two shop girls.

ppeatfruit · 07/03/2013 09:25

Thinking about Mr Selridge IMO the S.W.'s have fallen into the (it must have sex or violence preferably both or no one will watch it )trap it pisses me off actually, they don't credit the audience with much patience or the ability to enjoy a production without explicit S & V.

foxymoon487 · 07/03/2013 17:06

Yes,well not entirely happy
with Agne's character being
so modernised.For the first
few episodes she was portrayed
as a very authentic Edwardian
miss,getting excited by the small
detail of a new ribbon for her hat,
and worried what everyone would
think of her drunken father.Now
she has changed into Miss
Almost Late For Work because
of all the hot action she's been getting.
Am certain no Exwardian young woman
would stay over at her bloke's place
night after night No matter how
gorgeous and French he might be
It simply wouldn't have been done
Shows laziness on the part of the
scriptwriters that they have morphed
her character into 2013 behaviour.
Still enjoying it though

gregssausageroll · 07/03/2013 17:12

Last one on Sunday

ppeatfruit · 08/03/2013 12:37

It said on the TV that it's the end of the series on Sunday does that mean there's going to be another? There better be; what with the end of Call The Midwife this Sunday too I'm going to be bereft on sunday night Sad. (DH had just got into them as well Grin Sad).

Talisin · 08/03/2013 14:59

Second series starts filming in April I believe & is supposed to be set a few years later, in the run up to WW1.
