Documentaries about polygamous cults are ten a penny, but they're not usually set on a farm outside Hove. That's where Philip - a former rabbi who knows he's a prophet, because God told him - lives with his heartbreakingly deluded harem. The odd blackly comic moment aside (Philip describes the process of purifying one's faith as "going round the bend"), Marc Isaacs's film is horribly tragic. As the wives weep through Philip's esteem-destroying lectures, we see how easy it can be to manipulate people by using and abusing religion. The drab English setting makes it all the more chilling - and there's a quietly devastating denouement.

just going to watch it - I watched thm with Phil and Fern and apparantly he was ill through this documentry and it's not really how he is - can't wait to see

He was on R2 at lunchtime today - It was really odd because he talks so normally and convincingly it is easy to get drawn in to thinking his behaviour is normal!

She kept saying God this and God that - then when she was asked if all the wives were like a sisterhood - there was a silence and then she said 'that sounds really religious' like in a bad way - well you are religious aren't you?

urgh. What a nasty piece of work he is. Those poor women deserve better.
