Well it was bloody marvellous wasn't it. The last two episodes really kicked up the pace and the emotional agony, I could hardly cope.
I think they pushed their luck a bit with a couple of scenes (the bit where they scalped the slave trader and pretended he was alive seemed a stretch to me) but so much of it was superb it's hard to know where to begin the praise. Jerome Flynn has been a genuine revelation, truly amazing. Reid is just perfect, ponderous, tortured yet human. Anybody else actually jump off the sofa and indulge in fist pumping when he finally got his leg over? I absolutely love the orphanage lady, hope she's featured in the new series.
Reid's wife has a very strong presence, will be interesting to see where that goes. Will their marriage rekindle? Or will he find comfort elsewhere? Come to think of it, will she find comfort elsewhere? Go on Mrs Reid, we won't judge.
I found myself moved almost to tears by the loss of Hobbs, I had my eye on him as a grower. Long Susan may need to try some new facial expressions - hard eyes and tiny mouth will only take a character so far. And will Rose become a bobby's wife - surely not. That would be a Niles/ Daphne chemistry killer wouldn't it.
I love the newspaper editor too, though I don't understand why he sacrificed his ear to protect Jackson. Anyone know?
Really can't actually wait for the next series. Think I will rewatch this lot too, I'm sure I missed loads of detail first time round. I might not bother with the first ep though, talk about ill judged tone.
Love, love, loved it.
