Me! I thought it was ok and will carry on watching.

mayhew · 06/01/2013 22:45

Yes liking very much (a clue in my name). Particularly the script lacking anachronisms but not cod dickens, the costumes with a bit of east end flash and the new technology of the 19th century. And it fairly hurtles along!

CanYouHearMe · 06/01/2013 22:55

I watched it. Not that enamoured to be honest, but will probably continue to watch. Didn't realise they had bottled beers in the late 1800's.

monica77798 · 07/01/2013 10:53

My friend recommended this but I have not watched it myself yet. Caught a few seconds of it the other day. Is the general consensus it is nothing special?

picketywick · 07/01/2013 11:14

Press TV critics like the "Ripper" series. But does it overdo violence and blood lust?

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/01/2013 17:50

still havnt watched 1st episode yet, just never seem to have an hour spare when near a lappy lol

may need to watch via iphone and iplayer tonight when working

Quite gripping and the characters are interesting (apart from the annoying MyAnna whatsername, who's in everything at the moment). It's very gory, though, especially the first one.

cocolepew · 07/01/2013 18:16

I thought the first one was distasteful. All boobs and half naked women being killed. Much too graphic, its as they thought the viewers had no imagination.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/01/2013 00:23

Finally watched first episode on iplayer via my iPhone while feeding babs

Nothing like multitasking :)

Really enjoyed - so will now try and watch 2nd one

Though what was the inspectors dark secret /tragic mistake in his past?

I quite like it, have watched both. What do you think has happened to their daughter?

SpanishFly · 08/01/2013 13:29

lots of complaints about it online, esp since it is graphic and on at 9pm.
We watched 30 mins of the first one, but didnt find any of it particularly gripping and didnt care about any of the characters, so gave up. I was desperate to like it, too

MorrisZapp · 08/01/2013 22:41

I really liked episode 2, thought it was properly gripping although they should ditch the self regarding American tosser and give us more Jerome Flynn.

First episode was too graphic and exploitative for me, but I'm really warming to it now. Really like the two lead actors. It's my kind of stuff.

KatieScarlett2833 · 08/01/2013 23:55

Wanted to like it but gave up 20 mins in as was crap.

notcitrus · 09/01/2013 01:53

Just watched the first one - quite liked it with the 'we're so modern and using state of the art tech' ideas and the attempts to make the dialogue Victorian without being too jarring. And good central characters even if it did seem a bit like new-Sherlock or many other recent series going back in time.

Good to see a show acknowledging the huge Victorian demand for smut and how widespread prostitution was, around 1 in 3 women in London had worked as prostitutes. Actually might have been unmarried women, but still a huge proportion - hence the huge levels of fear of the Ripper rather than the "only prostitutes" reactions that came in later.

MorrisZapp · 09/01/2013 11:52

notcitrus, if you watch the shows I watch and read the books I read, you're aghast when any Victorian isn't a prostitute :)

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/01/2013 16:54

i really dont think either were too graphic or sexually explicit - i obv watch far too much smut on tv Grin

weird seeing jerome, has he been in anything since singing with robson?
