Girls-what did you really think to it?

I'm assuming its coming to the end of the season as there's been abig fall out.

I really wanted to like it. At one point I warmed to it but, then grew cold again. There where good bits like when she went home to stay with her parents. I honestly think they were too middle class for me, for want of a better expression. Rich girls slumming it. Maybe I'm just too old? I actcually preferred SATC!!

I watched a couple but fond it quite tedious. However I have LOVED Some Girls on BBC3 - quite possibly the funniest thing on the telly at the moment.

LightHousekeeping · 13/12/2012 22:29

Girls has been nominated for loads of awards. I feel as if I'm missing something.

I'm the same. Loved the first couple of episodes. Them it got really pretentious and drab. I also had to rewind one bit cos she took me by surprise and totally stripped off. Teeny tiny boobs for a ,well erm, curviy girl.

ohfunnyface · 13/12/2012 22:51

Bits I loved and bits made me cringe so much I had to change channels.

It's like Kids meets Curb your enthusiasm meets...ugh?!

I like it and hate it.

Dinosaurhunter · 13/12/2012 22:54

I love it ! Very funny .

KittyMcAllister · 13/12/2012 23:23

It's a real grower I think. Didn't really like it at first but I've especially warmed to Hannah. It can be really cringey though and the sex scenes are just yuk.

Bakingnovice · 13/12/2012 23:24

Terrible sex scenes. But then that's probs what its like out there atm. God I sound so old.

KittyMcAllister · 14/12/2012 15:59

Totally agree Baking. Am so glad I am past all that dating stuff, it just looks do tortured!

Bakingnovice · 15/12/2012 17:03

Me too kitty. Glad it's behind me. Although I don't remember it being that bad. It does make me miss sex in the city though.

MariaMandarin · 15/12/2012 17:17

I loved it. Thought it was a pretty realistic portrayal of some of the things that go on at that stage of life, including the terrible sex. Obviously Lena Dunham's friends were all a bit too good looking, but I loved the fact that she was happy to for us all to see her less than perfect body.

One thing that didn't ring true and marks it as being very definitely American is that nobody got drunk or had a hangover for the entire series. Wouldn't be possible to make a uk version without that.

SnowProbs · 15/12/2012 17:19

Havent watched it but friends have raved about it.

Agree Some Girls is glorious! Reminds me of school days. Very funny!

TeWisBeenNargledByTheMistletoe · 15/12/2012 17:22

I really like it.

I guess she's supposed to be similar age/background to me which helps.

It is quite brutal though! It reminds me of a (very American) Skins.

tribpot · 15/12/2012 17:25

I hope Lena Dunham put the godawful sex bits in because she wanted to, and not because she was persuaded the series would not be successful as a portrayal of warts-and-all young women unless they did a lot of shagging.

I do like the sheer dreadfulness of Hannah's 'relationship' with Adam - the guy who couldn't be more of a red flag unless his pervo-romper-suit was red instead of white. Very well written.

But I think there is a limit to how long you can keep a series going when essentially nothing happens at all. And it's in danger of being very one-note and overplaying the excruciating.

MariahScarey · 15/12/2012 17:27

Boring. Watched the first then bined

SantaIAmSoFuckingRock · 15/12/2012 17:27

i only watched a couple of episodes but didn't like it. the main girl (not sure of her name) just seemed really stupid/immature in relationships. maybe i needed to watch more.

I never got SATC. just didn't ever warm to it. did people really like it as much as they seemed to at the time?

SantaIAmSoFuckingRock · 15/12/2012 17:30

yes tribpobt that relationship. it makes me wonder about her own relationships when she wrote this part for herself.

lizzypuffs · 15/12/2012 17:31

I tried to force myself to like it but it made me cringe. Just too boring for words.

LightHousekeeping · 15/12/2012 21:03

Its just too talky and angsty. I found myself deleting half way through each episode. Im presuming the one with the strange transatlanic accent copped off witht he dad of the girls she was babysitting for?

I'm trying to like it and it has moments of genius. I liked when she had the job and the two female colleagues where trying to help her. I also liked when she went home and she had to help her mum move her naked dad. The things that make it hard to like are there's no real storylines building up, it's right done that move on. Also I'm only a few years older than the characters but I don't remember finding life so hard or being so poor me all the time when really there lives are quite easy.

FrillyMilly · 15/12/2012 21:36

*their lives

tribpot · 15/12/2012 21:40

LightHouse - I think he tried it on and she told him to do one. But as there is no follow-through from one ep to the next, who the hell knows!

TeWisBeenNargledByTheMistletoe · 15/12/2012 21:47

She did tell him to do one, then lost her job obvs, the mum-boss came round and was fairly nice about it and poked ex-nanny into maybe growing up a bit and working out what she wants to do with her life.

Bakingnovice · 15/12/2012 22:06

Tribpot you are right. Because the story isn't ever going anywhere you feel quite detached from it as a viewer. There are some episodes I thought ''and the point of this episode is what??'.

LightHousekeeping · 15/12/2012 22:16

its so self indulgent. Like its trying to be Woody Allen but, failing.

Did you ever see her film Tiny furniture? It was praised by the critics but, I never got it. Maybe Girls just doesnt translate well over here.

In fact the only continuing story is the car crash that is Hannah's relationship with Adam! It finally makes Carrie and Big look functional and healthy.
