Help: looking for Downton-esque series for a present

My DB and DSIL like DA and I thought I could get them some other British period drama for Christmas, they are not British so it doesn't matter whether it is very well known or not as it is unlikely they wouldhave already watched it.

They like DA because of the period details, settings and the quality of the filming, apart from thee plot itself.
Any suggestions?
TIA

Not series, but what about DVDs of Jane Austen films such as Pride and Predjudice and Emma? Also Jane Eyre is a good film. Or Gosford Park.
The other period series we liked was Lark Rise to Candleford.

Bearandcub · 06/12/2012 08:36

Hmmm film might look a little dated now but The House of Elliott?

MeeWhoo · 06/12/2012 11:57

Thank you both for your suggestions. I have never heard of either of these series so I am off to youtube etc. to have a good look. (As for the films, they are very much for I was looking for, but I am pretty sure they would have seen them already andI wanted to "introduce them" to something).

Thanks again.

Another good one would be "Call the Midwife".

YDdraigGoch · 06/12/2012 12:42

Or The Paradise

MeeWhoo · 07/12/2012 11:43

Thanks YDdraigGoch, I'll have a look at those too.

The original Upstairs Downstairs? Would also second the House of Elliott. Couldn't stand The Paradise though. Any of the good Jane Austen adaptations.

There was also an ITV series, The Grand, set in a 1920s hotel. That was good.

MeeWhoo · 07/12/2012 12:01

Thanks again for the new suggestions.

What do you think about North and South, here ? I can get this one with subtitles in Spanish, which they might appreciate, the other ones only seem to have subtitles in English.

The original BBC Pride and Prejudice, definitely - nothing better to introduce them to than Colin Firth's Mr Darcy!

megandraper · 07/12/2012 12:15

The North and South you've linked to, OP, is BRILLIANT. I lent mine to a friend a couple of years ago and still haven't got it back. Really beautifully done, and very romantic :)

nipersvest · 07/12/2012 12:20

brideshead revisited?

anonacfr · 07/12/2012 12:21

The newer version of The Forsyte Saga (with Damian Lewis as Soames) is fabulous.
Great cast and very true to the book.

LittleChristmasBearPad · 07/12/2012 12:22

Watching north and south now. It's wonderful.

SavoyCabbage · 07/12/2012 12:25

Cranford.

GlaikingAroundTheChristmasTree · 07/12/2012 12:31

Lark rise to candle ford . Lovely Sunday night drama!

schmohawk · 12/12/2012 20:28

Another vote for the Forsyte Saga, it's cracking! You can have a look on You Tube... Jane Eyre also fab.

Clayhead · 12/12/2012 20:52

North & South is brilliant - I watch it every year Smile

I also like Cranford, Bleak House, Wives & Daughters, He Knew He Was Right & Little Dorrit.

ShipwreckedUnderTheTree · 12/12/2012 21:11

Parade's end is also great

OliviaPeaceOnMumsnet · 12/12/2012 21:12

Bleak house was AMAZING

wintera · 12/12/2012 22:41

Pride and prejudice with Colin Firth is a must have. North and south is very good. Cranford and bleak house were also very well done. I also have a soft spot for the BBC version of Our mutual friend as well.
