The setting for the Grand Design in the first of this new series is so gorgeous, you'll want to sit on the floor, weeping, as you bang your fists against the TV screen, yelling, "It's not fair, it's not fair." Well, that's what I did. A nasty part of me hoped that I'd hate the very wealthy couple who'd bought this piece of heaven - a disused trout farm complete with loch in the middle of nowhere, yet less than an hour's drive from Glasgow. But Jim and Simone are charming. Curses! Oh well, there's still much enjoyment to be had, simmering in envy as we watch the couple build their stupendously lovely home in this completely deserted spot. There aren't even too many of those typical Grand Designs almost-disasters to keep us on our seat-edges while we hope (actually, this is probably just me) that the whole thing turns to disaster. The lovely Kevin McCloud can't mask his admiration for the plans of the perfectionist couple as they strive, whatever the cost, to build the house of their dreams.

did you think that house was suitable for a baby??

rickman · 05/04/2006 22:08

No, I can never imagine any children there. All that water would scare the hell out of me as well, I'd be worried that one of them would drown, or I would fall in in a drunken stupour!

thewomanwhosnotmeanttobehere · 05/04/2006 22:08

thought the house was fab.

thewomanwhosnotmeanttobehere · 05/04/2006 22:10

would be ok for an immobile baby, and brilliant for kids who can swim. but stressful inbetween.

Pruni · 05/04/2006 22:10

I loved the location of that house.
Agree about the water.
They must have waited for weeks to get the footage of the hills in sunlight. Grin

I kept looking at all the glass walls/glass stairs/shiny kitchen etc wondering how long you'd spend cleaning the mucky handprints off !

noddyholder · 06/04/2006 08:35

Didn't think I'd like the house but ended up loving it and the location was perfect. What was the illness Kevin kept referring to Was it lupus?

Furball · 06/04/2006 08:43

I loved it even though it wasn't family friendly.

I can imagine a thread title - Help! I can't find a stairgate to fit my stairs Grin

katyp · 06/04/2006 08:52

Yes I was also thinking about the implications of a toddler and all that water... and picturing how it would look when strewn with toys, etc!

Thought it looked a bit impersonal and not like a family home - I bet they never stick up their kids drawings in that kitchen!

Carmenere · 06/04/2006 08:55

I really admired the integrity of the project and the quality of the workmanship/craftwork but I diddn't actually like the design of the building from the outside. It would have worked much better if it was a longer lower shape. The interior was just a bit too footballers wives for my taste, it looked like a five star hotel but not a home.
That said - I'd take a present of it Grin

Also they were minted so there will be a fleet of staff to polish those stairs and save the kids from drowningSmile
