Only if he can be in control of it.

Don´t think he should just hand it over to someone who has (like their father) shown themselves to be crap with money.

In fact I think he should just walk away from the whole ridiculous outdated institution.

And I think that old Matthew would have done.

Not being snobby but still tied up with his grief/ guilt over Lavinia.

However I can't see why he can't invest it in the estate for the greater good + all.
(local employment, housing etc of staff)

OH i'm pleased there's another thread about Downton (i was getting square eyes lurking at the other one ) . Yes of course Mathew should TAKE THE MONEY but it would stop the plot dead wouldn't it? Lady Mary 's getting very snobby now she's going to be the Countess out doing her grandma maggie who she used to make fun of.

And another question - did Bates admit to murdering Vera right at the end of last night's episode??? We thought he did.

Not sure if Bates actually admitted it, or just said what he did to put the fear of god into his cellmate.

I suspect he DID it, though.
