Have just been catching up watching Greg Wallace.

Thought it was a bit off when he started off by saying he had full custody of his children as if that was something to be proud of. Hmm

Anyway just found out his 2nd wife (mother of his children) had a break down and was in hospital for 3 months after finding out he'd had an affair. Then he got full custody. Makes his comment even more inapproprate. His third wife of only a few months has recently split with him.

Funnily enough there are some similar parallels with his ancesters' lifes in this programme.

Oh. Was just about to ask if it was worth watching as missed the first two. Sounds like it is. Much I like Patrick Stewart, I found his a tiny bit dull. Prefer it when they go back a bit further in history.

Snoopersparadise · 01/09/2012 16:33

I thought the same, it really put me off him.

I usually love WDYTUA but I wasn't keen on that episode at all and yes, I thought the Patrick Stewart one was a bit dull.

I've been watching the US ones and it makes me laugh how many of them they manage to link to the pilgrim settlers! Don't they realise that you have about 50,000+ great grandparents!

FalseStartered · 01/09/2012 16:41

i thought the Greg pasty Wallace episode was horrible to watch - the way he fired questions at his mother as they went through the family album was painful to watch

Longdistance · 01/09/2012 16:50

Agree with the Patrick Stewart one. It just went as far as his dad. Yes, he was in WWII, but a dig further would have been nice. A lot focussed on why his dad beat his poor mother :(

FalseStartered · 01/09/2012 17:21

since Patrick Stewart is a great antiDV and women's rights campaigner, i don't think it was an oversight in the labouring that point, Long

i'm going to watch that episode tonight on iPlayer

living the dream me

MyNeighbourIsStrange · 01/09/2012 17:25

He behaved like a cad to the mother of his kids? That puts a new slant on things. I didn't realise he was such an unpleasant character, Ewwww.

FalseStartered · 01/09/2012 17:33

i think he was more of a complete bastard than a 'cad'

PSs mother had to go to court to make him acknowledge at least one of his children, at a time when it was still very much frowned upon to be unmarried with children.

maybe this series has a not very well hidden message about shit parents?

FalseStartered · 01/09/2012 17:34

i retract that about shit parents, i don't mean the ex Mrs W was a shit parent

maybe it's about the shit women have to deal with as parents?

Grin

Patrick Stewart's was unusual in its focus on one relative and such a close relative, but there was so much he didn't know about his father's life, and his father had such an important role at a crucial time in our history, it was worth it. Am impressed to hear he campaigns against DV.

edam · 01/09/2012 18:39

But yes, I'm always amused by the ones who get all excited about their great-great-great-great-grandparents, having completely failed to do the maths and realised thousands of other people are descended from them as well.

However, Matthew Pinsent was hilarious when they took him to the College of Arms and traced his family back to God. Grin And he gave the impression of knowing full well it was ridiculous and would apply to tens of thousands of other people as well.

LouMacca · 01/09/2012 18:40

I really enjoyed the Patrick Stewart one. Didn't watch Greg Wallace, can't bear to watch the guy.....

Looking forward to Annie Lennox next week.

edam · 01/09/2012 18:41

Annie Lennox is lovely. Met her very briefly at an event a few weeks ago and she was very nice. My mate who was also there interviewed her once and said she was fab.

WildWorld2004 · 01/09/2012 18:46

Im looking forward to Annie Lennox.

Another thing about Greg Wallace was that when he split from his third wife he moved out (into a bachelor pad) & she looked after his kids. Which i thought was a bit bizzare.

Growlithe · 01/09/2012 18:48

I liked the Patrick Stewart one. He and his brother were very honest about their father. My own uncle saw land action in WW2 Europe. I was born in 1968 (my dad was much younger than him), and saw him as a cantankerous man who seemed quite cruel to his wife. There was, however, still something about him I loved. At his funeral his wife cried like a teenager crying over her first lost love.

Not apologising for his poor behaviour, but watching that programme gave me a different view of him. They must have seen some terrible stuff. Sad

InTheoryBut · 01/09/2012 19:00

This is one of the few series I record especially. Love it.

Thought Greg Wallace's v interesting, as I suspect all the doom and difficulties that his relatives faced were v common place to many many families. Didn't like all the custody stuff at the start, didn't do him any favours, in my opinion.

I thought Patrick's focus on his dad was fascinating, not just the factual stuff, but the emotional aspect of recognising who his dad was because of his experiences. I think he got the balance just right in not condoning , justifying or accepting the DV, but looking at why his dad might have behaved as he did.

Really looking forward to Annie Lennox - posh heritage, breezy middle class or grinding poverty? - what d'you reckon?!

Methe · 01/09/2012 19:10

Matthew Pincent was my all time favourite WDYTYA. I tried explaining it my my mum and she said "you do know God isn't a person, don't you?..."

I never noticed anything off about Wallace when I watched his ep.. he does sound like a knob if stuff about his ex is truebut V hard to judge people by what you read on google.

MyNeighbourIsStrange · 01/09/2012 19:35

So Greg Wise failed at marriage one, cheated in wife two, used the fact his lying abd cheating to have the affair that cintrubuted to her going insane, used her breakdown to get residency, then abandoned the kids with three month lasting wife three? He then gloats about resudency? Greg sounds like a psychopath, poor kids.
