he did seem nice, really wish he'd increased the wages of the cleaning staff.

TheSilverPussycat · 06/08/2012 23:45

Well, I can see why he didn't. Eventually globalisation may solve that one? (Am an optimist)

The fact he tried to defend and say it was equal to pay people £3 an hour to work 11 hours, 7 days a week for 6 months just because they are from a different country is disgusting. The excuse that everyone else does it is pathetic, it's all about profit never mind exploiting people. For this reason he is horribly unattractive.

TheSilverPussycat · 09/08/2012 09:30

Frilly his hands are tied by the system. He didn't say it was equal to pay people £3 an hour either. If he paid min wage then the prices would have to go up, and the number of customers would go down. They would use ferries that paid people £3 an hour. Stenna would go out of business and a large number of people including those we saw would lose their jobs.

He (and I) knows it ain't fair.

At the end when he spoke the board he said he was pleased to see they treated everybody equally. Was he not talking about the staff? Did he mean customers?

TheSilverPussycat · 09/08/2012 10:16

I know he said that. He meant apart from the pay :( - he meant they treated them like human beings and I think they did. I am sure you have no objection to the Captain being paid more (extreme example perhaps).

Right I are what he meant about the equal thing now. I don't object to people being paid different amounts for different jobs/levels of responsibility but I just don't think paying someone £3 an hour is acceptable. They know it's not acceptable as they only doing to the Filipinos not to anyone else. No one from the UK would put up with it. I don't think saying the cost of living is less over there is a good excuse either. Is stena a UK company? If so they should get NMW. Do they only set to work once in international waters? I didn't really hear the explanation for how they got round NMW.

I know the MD feels his hands are tied but it does really annoy me (just in case you couldn't tell Smile )

TheSilverPussycat · 09/08/2012 10:39

Only people from a place with low costs and few jobs - like Filipinos - would take those jobs. At least they don't use workfare. And no, I am not being flippant.
