Fleshmarket Close
In a mean bit of scheduling, two immensely popular whodunnits go head to head, which will doubtless quite rightly upset lovers of TV crime dramas. But it's Rebus that has the edge over BBC1's Dalziel and Pascoe. Based on Ian Rankin's book Fleshmarket Close, this is a downbeat, occasionally dour, but always absorbing mystery involving murder in Edinburgh's asylum-seeking and immigrant community. Ken Stott, who has an admirable ability to inhabit a role thoroughly, is again excellent as the shambolic detective. Here, he and his wise female sidekick are called upon to investigate the disappearance of a young Kosovan woman from her home on a bleak high-rise estate. There's a strong suggestion she's been subjected to racial torments by a family of thugs, one of whom has also gone missing.
