It's very sad though. Quite heartbreaking really, and quite scary to think this is what might happen.

Saltire · 04/07/2012 21:20

DH said exactly the same thing. My mum is 65, my step dad 68. It worries me what will happen to my mu if my step dad dies, as she doesn't have a big or private pension.

Hunniford's not coming off well so far...

Saltire · 04/07/2012 21:24

I just want to give the old man getting the visit from Baldrick a big hug.

It does show what money can do for your quality of life. All these families are living in poverty.

That poor husband and wife, she must be knacked and he must feel such a burden.

Gloria huniford seems very judgemental

griphook · 04/07/2012 21:26

Fuck getting old :(

Saltire · 04/07/2012 21:28

I agree about Pat and Malcolm, said to DH that he must feel such a burden and of course he is aware of whats going on

I felt sad that the one lady feels her DH can't go into a home. It's been really good for my Grandma - she's gained weight, she's socialising, she can still get out! How sad that he refuses to go into respite :(

griphook · 04/07/2012 21:31

He must feel very vulnerable, he must wonder what will happen to him if his wife dies

Saltire · 04/07/2012 21:32

I think he feels that he migh not go back home. I used to work in an old peoples home and I know many of them felt that they were abandoned, even hough they saw their families on an almost dialy basis

OMG what a voice

HaveALittleFaith · 04/07/2012 21:36

Without respite it's like she's working a 24/7 job without any holidays! I'm sure she'll find it easier to care for him when he comes out again.

Saltire · 04/07/2012 21:42

Oh how great she's won £1000

HaveALittleFaith · 04/07/2012 21:47

Grin how luffly! She can go on her cruise. 4 days with someone new in her life and it's changed everything!

griphook · 04/07/2012 21:47

How would ivy find the deposit for a flat?

Saltire · 04/07/2012 21:50

The old man singing is making me well up

Oh. How very, very sad. It's heartbreaking.

griphook · 04/07/2012 22:15

I had to turn it off, far too hormonal. Did she get to go on her cruise

HaveALittleFaith · 04/07/2012 22:24

Yes he said he wouldn't go back on his word :) and they were both glad they did the experience.

BiscuitNibbler · 04/07/2012 23:45

Thought this was such a good programme, on a topic that is usually not discussed on TV.

I cannot abide Gloria Hunniford though. I said to DH at the start - I bet she makes this about herself and talks about her daughter and lo and behold she did.

There's another one tomorrow, about care homes.

Icelollycraving · 05/07/2012 09:36

That programme made me sob from about 3 minutes in. I kept saying to dh "they are going to get him singing again,it's too much for me" but I am a complete bloody softy

Saltire · 05/07/2012 09:37

I too sadi to Dh that Gloria Hunniford would make mention of her daughter at some point

OP posts:
Icelollycraving · 05/07/2012 09:43

Well she would wouldn't she? Hmm
I think she doesn't come over as particularly warm but she's pretty glam for 71.

gingeroots · 05/07/2012 10:07

I watched this a thought a few things

couple with husband who had stroke - they would be eligible for support from carers coming in .
They could even have budget paid to them and could employ the person ( even a relative ) of their choice .

For reasons not given they must have decided not to opt for this support .

( and ,sorry if this sounds harsh ,but the nano second at start of programme showed husband terribly/dangerously /uncomfortably and incorrectly positioned in sling on hoist )

The lady struggling to cope financially had debts ,so she may not be your typical pensioner . Just so that people don't imagine that all pensioners only have £3.50 to live on each week .

And how lovely were they all - I especially liked the other two and their celebs .
How lovely were Simpson and Robinson .
Oh and Lesley Joseph was fantastic - kind ,pracrical ,good fun ,not shy of being shown without make up .

Vagaceratops · 05/07/2012 10:13

I loved the old lady who lived in Suffolk and who watched wrestling! Had a tear in my eye when she went to the cemetery and talked about no-one loving her.

It also made me think about my own pension and how I want to save a bit harder for it!
