Do you like the new Miss Marple??

After steeling myself to HATE the new Miss Marple, I have to admit I was wrong. I loved Joan Hickson, but Geraldine McEwan is really growing on me, and the productions have been really stylish too. Am I going mad, or are they a pleasant surprise?

No, I have nothing better to do. Really

Nbg · 20/02/2006 15:55

I really enjoyed them.

Liked last weeks too. That was a good one.

Greensleeves · 20/02/2006 15:56

The Moving Finger? Or Sleeping Murder? I can't remember which was last week... they were both surprisingly good though!!

Have looked and cant find if it was or not? Was it???

Cassoulet · 20/02/2006 15:57

I hated the first one; I thought there was too much added in which was unnecessary, and watched no more until last night - wanted to see pretty frocks and stuff like that. Pleasantly surprised, but still think Joan Hickson can't be beat.

Greensleeves · 20/02/2006 16:02

Have you seen any of the Margaret Rutherford ones? They are totally different!

Much prefer Geraldine to Joan. Am really enjoying them (till about 20 mins in when I remember the plot from years of reading them). Think the production is excellent and really enjoy the top casting - unlike Midsommer Murders it's impossible to deduce who the murderer is just by spotting who the celebrity guest is.

helsi · 20/02/2006 16:09

My all time favourite is Margaret Rutherford. Joan Hickson was a bit stern for me (but a good character) whereas Geraldine plays it like a busy bodie aunty1

Last nights was good - very busy but lots of red herrings.

Greensleeves · 20/02/2006 16:14

lol Cupcakes... the only good think about Midsomer Murders is the theme music!

In the books Miss Marple IS a busy body old Auntie... there's lots of humour in them. Joan Hickson was great, and the productions she was in were beautifully done, but I agree about ehr being a bit stern.

I didn't even know Joan Hickson had died . She died in 1998 .

Greensleeves · 20/02/2006 16:19

I didn't know she was dead either!

agree about the busy body aunty - that's why nobody takes her seriously and she is able to do so much sleuthing. People say things to her in unguarded moments. Joan was too stern and scary. She needed to be more fluffy to be the amenable aunt.

Greensleeves · 20/02/2006 16:27

Exactly... she should be a cosy old lady who uses doilies and lace handkerchiefs and exists on pots of English Breakfast and fruit cake. But she should have, as one of her friends says "a mind like a bacon slicer". That's what makes her interesting!! I think Geraldine McEwan was a really good choice.. and normally I hate it when things I like get meddled with.

But I do miss the old Joan Hickson theme music.

Greensleeves · 20/02/2006 17:42

No arguments there Just humming it cheers me up... so elegant and reassuring!!

I like the bit in the middle where it goes a bit dark and moody and you see illustrations of dangerous people lurking in the titles...

LOOBYLOU2 · 20/02/2006 18:38

Sorry Geraldine McEwan far too twee for me - and as for that lace doily on her head
Joan Hickson was perfect
I did enjoy last night's tho - hasn't Greta Scaatchi aged ....

Yes I rather like her though she is a bit squeaky

What I want to know is.... (am saddo I know)

HOW do the women in these things do their hair? I mean, last night they were staying in a b&b in a pub with no visible method of styling hair and Greta Scatchi and others come out with these bun thingys all the way round and not a hair out of place.

GS has put on a LOT of weight I was shocked she used to be such a waif!

CountessDracula · 20/02/2006 18:44

and yes I know they have stylists etc but how did they do it?

Greensleeves · 20/02/2006 18:44

Oh god, I went COLD for a moment there... when you said "GS has put on a lot of weight" I thought you were talking about me!! Then I realised of course that you have never seen me
