I have sky. Can't have anything else. A friend recently moved and went with virgin. She longs for sky again!

TequilaMockinBird · 21/05/2012 19:10

Sky

Akermanis · 21/05/2012 19:10

Virgin broadband is far superior, don't get all the Sky tv channel interactive functions though

only4tonight · 21/05/2012 19:14

Virgin. I covet tivo

TheOriginalNutcracker · 21/05/2012 19:28

Sky, much more flexible channel packages than Virgin.

rainbowinthesky · 21/05/2012 19:52

How is virgin for recording programmes?

annoying, if you have a tivo. it tries to predict things you may like based on what you've already recorded, but it is rather less good at this than, say, Amazon are when they recommend stuff to you.

on the other hand it has more tuners than the sky box, so it can record 2 channels while you watch a third.

broadband is far better though. am gutted we are moving out of a cabled area.

dexter73 · 22/05/2012 08:44

We have moved from Sky to Virgin. You can record more on Virgin and I like the catch up. You don't get Sky Atlantic (don't watch it anyway so this wasn't a problem. Preferred the menu system on Sky but whenever it rained hard we would lose our signal which was immensely annoying and the main reason we left. They are very similar really.

tiredandbusy · 22/05/2012 08:48

Virgin does get sky Atlantic I think now? Can record 3 channels and watch a fourth with TiVo. TiVo is amazing! Good searches and remote recording etc.

dexter73 · 22/05/2012 11:20

No plans to launch it yet. I think Sky want too much cash and it also means they have one up on Virgin.

FrillyMilly · 24/05/2012 08:48

I used to have TiVo (I got selected to get it for free when it launched) but when we moved house and weren't allowed virgin they made me pay £180 to leave the contract. The contract they started when they gave me free TiVo. So although TiVo is good and the broadband is far superior I will not be using them again. We now have sky and I do watch quite a bit on Atlantic. I wish they would sort themselves so we could record two and watch a third but the sky box is a lot more responsive than the virgin one.

GnocchiNineDoors · 24/05/2012 08:50

I love Virgin. I never watch anything 'realtime'. I set all my series to record, can record two at the same time and be watching a third show.

I delet everything as soon as Ive watched it, so never even get half full.

I luff it.

wonkylegs · 24/05/2012 08:58

I had Sky years back and now have Virgin - prefer Virgin. Very few issues and those that we've had over the years have been sorted very quickly, politely and with little hassle. Cable broadband is brilliant too!
Recording is easy, we have the V+ box and only problem is we record so much (kids putting on fireman Sam series record on a full day of FS arghhhAngry) so can fill up quick if you are not careful

BlackCatsAndPurpleDogs · 24/05/2012 09:11

Virgin, without a doubt. Been with them since they were NTL must be what, 15 years now.

Will go in depth as to why, just to steer you away from SKY who I detest with a passion. Have family with them and they are shite. They hardly use the internet so were on the basic broadband pack. Had friend to stay for a couple weeks which sent them over their measly 2GB use (we use that in a day!) Sky increased their pack next month and said as they had gone over they HAD to upgrade. Family said to Sky what about the previous 12 months where they had hardly used a thing, does that not balance things out seeing as this extra month was a one off, Sky did not wanna know. Also their call centres cost a bomb on an 0845 number. Virgin is free, you just ring 150 from home phone and choose your option.

Never once had loss of tv service with Virgin, programmes never fail to record, can record 2 while watching a 3rd. With the V+box you can record 80 hours of stuff. They warn you if your set-to-records will clash.

Broadband is fast, and what it says it is. We are on 30mbps, soon to be doubled to 60 by August for free, new customers now go straight on 60mb package. Depending on how thick your walls are and how good your pc is. I get 30mbps wirelessly on one pc which is on a 2nd floor from the router, but on a 5 year old laptop on the same floor only get 22mbps. If you have a wired connection or get some Home Plugs (these give you a wired connection using your plug sockets) you will get the speeds they say you will.
You can change your phone package to suit,so go for an international call package to give cheaper calls, I am on the Talk Anytime so all landline UK calls are free, never phone abroad so not sure of that package.

Also am quite sure Virgin is cheaper (compare the long term costs, ignore any half price for 6 months etc when comparing both)
