The Sopranos Season 6 - just watched the ending!

The cut to black........are we to assume that Tony was whacked and the black symbolised that he was no longer conscious?

that is the general opinion.

I suppose they had to find a way to end the series which would mean breaking with the main character.

Really though would he want to sit in a diner like that with his whole family only days after being in hiding??

Please put spoiler in the title, some of us have been watching this on Sky Atlantic from the beginning and we are just starting Season 6. I have been a good girl. I havent even googled it. Im totally ignoring what I just thought I read

Im loving the Sopranos, we often discuss it on here. No-one has ever mentioned the ending as we agreed we would come back when we get there.

I think its the best thing Ive seen on telly and, Im dreading it ending. I dont dont honestly know how I missed it the first time around but, Im glad I did

Oh no I didn't think you had to interpret it in that way at all! I thought it was more like, this was how his life would have to be forever, always waiting for that door to open, not knowing who was behind it.

Oh, it's a brilliant show - I was totally addicted. Curlyc, that sounds like a plausible explanation too But there was something odd about how Meadow burst through tbe door.

I don't believe he was whacked at the diner.
I think it was more like, life goes on for the Soprano family.

Kicking, that's an interpretation I hadn't thought of before but I like it.

To me, it was because we entered Tony's life at a random moment and so we had to leave it at a random moment, IYSWIM? So, like stringcheese says, life just goes on.

I think he was definitely whacked at the end. You see that guy loitering in the diner, looking at him. The loitering guy then goes to the toilet (a la Michael Corleone in the Godfather). So my assumption is that he came out with a weapon and shot Tony.

They do have a discussion in an earlier episode that season about what it's like getting whacked and they conclude that you won't see or hear anything - it will all just go black. And that's what happens to Tony in the last scene.

Every time the diner door opens and the bell rings, he looks up and you see what he sees. Then the final time it opens, you just see black, which presumably is what he sees when he is whacked at that moment.

I'm with kicking; Tony can try to have normal family occasions like the one in the diner, but every slightly suspicious man might be the man with a bullet for him, and every seemingly innocuous glance/move/comment by anyone looks suspicious.

In other words, life goes on, but he will always be slightly looking over his shoulder.

Well, I think this all shows that it's the best end to a programme ever.

Because it makes you wonder, and lets you decide.

I felt like it went black for us, the viewers rather than for Tony but I'm not completely sure.

Tony already had a few near misses!
