Yes, the BBC won't be commissioning a third series. Apparently it got rubbish ratings, but it was up against Homeland.

Wasn't that about 35 years ago or did I miss something?

No, just me?

I'm not surprised, though slightly sad. I did watch all the episodes, but felt that some of them weren't great. Lack of strong characters (with a couple of exceptions) and storylines perhaps?

I did enjoy, I think it was the last episode, most.

I enjoyed the first series when it was first revived, but the second series was utterly rubbish and I stopped watching. It didn't help that ITV had done so much better with Downton Abbey, though the second series of that was rubbish too imo.

I am sad as I enjoyed the last half of the last episode and thought that the next series would be fine Grin. The rest of the series was rubbish though and it could have been so much better as could Downton Abbey. How could Gosford Park be so good and Downton such a load of stereotypical tosh? Probably another thread tho'

polyhymnia · 01/05/2012 17:37

No not sorry. Didn't think it was well scripted and central two 'toff' characters very wooden and unsympathetic

bellabelly · 01/05/2012 17:38

I really liked it and am surprised (and gutted!) that there won't be another series. It was fab Sunday night tv.

Not surprised. I enjoyed the first "new" series but gave up on the second with boredom. Love Downton Abbey but it is ridiculous and telegraphed quite often. Gosford Park is totally overrated imo although I enjoy it, it is full of cliches and can't make up its mind whether its an upstairs/downstairs story or a whodunit. The Stephen Fry character if GP is crap. That Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson one is better but its too sad, err what is it? Not Howard's End the other one when he's the butler and she's the housekeeper.........

Remains of the Day?

Not surprised at all, or sad. Plodding storylines, wooden actors. In particular, the main male character was utterly dreadful, as was his sister-in-law Persie - both very wooden. I had no sympathy for either them at all.

Downton was rubbish too tbh, especially the second series. Mind you will be watching the third for light entertainment. :)

I was really sad to see Upstairs Downstairs go. I must admit the new remake wasn't great, but the whole idea of bringing UpDown back to our screens was great. I miss Hudson, Lady Marjorie, Lord Bellamy, Rose, Ruby, Sarah, Captain James, Miss Elizabeth and everyone else, the 1970s version was amazing, its loads better than Downton but the new version had a high bar set and sadly it missed it. More work could bring it back to its greatness and could beat Downton.

I also think the new story lines were a little loose and messy. There was too many ideas all in one show making the stories mixed. The old version just kept with one idea and could entertain people with it for over an hour. If only the full cast were alive or able to come back.

Still sad to see it gone BUT ALL IS NOT LOST as ITV 3 now have the old Upstairs Downstairs running from around 7:30 in the morning. Thank God someone has it :D
