Just seen that the latest in the series is due to go out in May.
Very pleased - I love this prog. One of best ever made imho. I so hope that the lovely liverpudlian boy who had the breakdown but then seemed to be doing ok is still alright.

I spent hours and hours catching up with the series on Youtube. It's wonderful viewing.

Happyasapiginshite · 25/04/2012 20:52

His name was Neil. He has haunted me since I was a teenager, poor man. He was friends with that lovely man, was it Charles? who was just lovely to him. I hope he's still ok. Anyone any idea what date it's on?

MadameThernadier · 25/04/2012 21:45

Bruce helped Neil and Neil was his best man when he got married.
Bruce as a child said he wanted to help poor children in Africa, and went on to be a teacher in a state school in a deprived area.
My favourite is Sue Grin
I lurve this series and know everything about it, definately on some time in May.

Happyasapiginshite · 25/04/2012 22:22

O Bruce, yes! He's so lovely. Which one was Sue?

wintera · 25/04/2012 23:04

Cannot wait for the new 56 up one. Neil really intrigues me. The change in him from 7 up to 14 up was so alarming. I too have been watching them all on youtube recently you see. He's so happy and carefree in 7 up and then by 14 he's already so altered. Such a shame. I think my favourites up to now were the original 7 up and then 21 up. My daughter is seven herself at the mo and she loves watching 7 up on YouTube. She loves little Tony, Jackie and Nick the most I think.

MadameThernadier · 26/04/2012 20:45

Sue is one of the three 'working class' girls, divorced from the children's father and works in a university. The other two are Jackie and Lynn. Sue always talks a lot of sense and seems happy in herself.
Neil changed between 7up and 14up because his parents divorced, if I remember correctly.
Tony is another favourite, and the lovely Nicholas.

LeeCoakley · 26/04/2012 21:28

Love this. They are my age and I've always watched it avidly. I loved Bruce and then in the last series or the one before he went to work in a private school for an easy life. You let me down Bruce! What do I hope for Neil? A family and a job and happy.

bigTillyMint · 26/04/2012 21:32

Oh I love this series! Thanks so much for the heads-up. Neil was my favourite - such a gorgeous little boy, and then such a sad turn to his life. I hope it has turned again for the better.

I wish there were more longitugnal studies of children - adults, it's fascinating.

MadameThernadier · 27/04/2012 19:45

I have always assumed Neil has mental health issues although it's never been said outright, but he did hint at it in 35up (I think). I really hope he has had some happiness in his life in the last 7 years. I think everyone routes for him.
Also, I will be surprised if Jackie returns for the next series, she really lost her temper with Michael in the last one!
And I hope Tony and his wife are still together, even though she's worth ten of him the philandering sod.

Eggrules · 27/04/2012 19:48

Neil is a favourite with me too, Can't remember the others and need a catch up before May. Looking forward to seeing how they have all got on.

dogindisguise · 27/04/2012 20:38

I think I've only seen the last series. Is that seven years ago already?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 27/04/2012 20:49

I'm just catching up with it on YouTube as well first watched it in sociology in 1988 and have been addicted ever since.

I think Bruce is my favourite, he's such a sweetie.

bigTillyMint · 27/04/2012 21:01

Eggy, it's coz he's a scouser, innit?Wink!

QwertyGerty · 27/04/2012 21:03

Just before the last one was aired (so, seven years ago!) I was in the back of one of the guy's cab. He said he'd had an affair and acted stupidly!

Eggrules · 27/04/2012 21:05

bigTillyMint maybe Wink
