How did Lewis's wife die in Lewis?

I only watch the odd episode on itv3 and haven't a clue why she died.

She was always mentioned in morse but now he's just mentioned she's died a few years ago.

When? How? Why?

It was a hit and run. Lewis went abroad to work afterwards came back in first episode of Lewis. Hit and run driver turns up in one of the later episodes
