Yet another boxed set query - thrillers this time!

I know it's been done a thousand times, but this time I'm after something quite specific. I love a good thriller, as does DH. Can you recommend a good boxed set to replace those we've already seen. We've watched (and liked), the following so far:

24 (various series, though got a bit silly towards the end)
Prison Break
Wire (excellent)
Damages
Dexter (less keen)
Spiral
The Killing (best thing on TV last year)
Mad Men (OK, not a thriller, but excellent none-the-less)
Mad Men (ditto)
Murder One

Oh, and I liked Borgen, though DH less keen.

Can anyone recommend anything new that we could try? Don't like science fiction, or vampirey things, but pretty open minded otherwise Smile

Thanks, in advance.

Don't know if it is out yet, but we really enjoyed 'Revenge'.
This is an American series very loosely based on 'The Count of Monte Cristo'Grin (this makes it sound more intellectual than it is!). It's not high art, more entertainment than something like 'The Wire' where you have to concentrateGrin

Have seen most of the stuff on your list- have you seen 'Homeland'- really, really good, not a thriller, as such, but very well made (and it has Mandy Patinkin in it, who I LOVE).

DilysPrice · 09/03/2012 21:15

State of Play (British original is good, although he was blatantly making the plot up as he went along).

And Ultraviolet (Jack Davenport & Idris Elba) is an excellent thriller even though it does have the odd V-word.

Raahh · 09/03/2012 21:17

mmmmmm Idris Elba

Shame 'Luther' was such a disappointment

joanofarchitrave · 09/03/2012 21:17

Ooh, is House of Cards on a boxed set? Yes it is. I recommend.

mammamoomin · 09/03/2012 22:16

Those that Kill is currently on ITV3 I think on a Thursday night but you can get the box set on Amazon for some silly price now or wait until the start of April when it comes down to sensible £20 ish... its got Troels in from Killing Series I....

I've only seen the first 2 episodes but its good... not quite Killing but still very good...

That and Wallander - any of them..... hmm think there is a theme with my recommendations here Grin

CarelessWispa · 10/03/2012 07:47

Thanks everyone. Some interesting suggestions here. I too have rather a soft spot for Idris Elba

DilysPrice · 10/03/2012 07:50

Yes, David Morrissey and John Simm.

Would also recommend House of Cards.

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2012 07:51

Getting on this we need new stuff. Went into hmv the other day and it was wall to wall vampires

belindarose · 10/03/2012 07:56

Like similar stuff to you although haven't seen Mad Men yet. On the list! We've just finished Homeland and now watching Breaking Bad. In a different, but brilliant vein, Misfits is fantastic and all of it is available on 4OD.

VivaLeBeaver · 10/03/2012 08:00

Game of Thrones.

CarelessWispa · 10/03/2012 08:28

I meant to add 'Breaking Bad' to my list. You're right, Belinda, very different, but very good. Managed to convert one of my friends and she's hooked now.

Haven't heard of 'Misfits'

OP posts:
Raahh · 10/03/2012 19:33

Oh 'Breaking Bad' is greatGrin- it took me a while to get into (it was a dh suggestion and I was dubious!), but I was soon really hooked.

joanofarchitrave · 10/03/2012 20:04

did you see 'Life on Mars'? I'm not sure it stands up brilliantly as a box set, but I still enjoyed it.

jasminerice · 10/03/2012 20:07

Great thread, I love thrillers

CarelessWispa · 10/03/2012 23:10

No, Joan, didn't see 'Life on Mars'. Is that the thing with Keeley Hawes set in the 80s? Must investigate....

I sincerely recommend that everyone should give 'Breaking Bad' a try. The acting is superb and, while it takes a while to get into it, it's well worth it. I'd never heard of the lead, Bryan Cranston, before. He's a brilliant actor. And I'm not related to him, honest!

Any more good thrillers lurking out there?

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2012 23:12

I had a look at breaking bad but the storyline doesn't sound that good - i assume it is? I love 24 and also life on mars - would I like this?
What about 6 feet under? That was brilliant.

joanofarchitrave · 10/03/2012 23:18

The keeley hawes one was the partial sequel 'Ashes to Ashes' (which I haven't seen yet), Life on Mars was set in the 70s.

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2012 23:23

ashes to ashes very good :)

knottyhair · 11/03/2012 08:14

Not exactly a thriller either, but Boardwalk Empire was brilliant Bit like The Wire as in it's a slow burner but we ended up getting totally engrossed.

SnapSnafu · 11/03/2012 08:19

Twin Peaks if you've never see it.

BrigitBigKnickers · 11/03/2012 18:19

Breaking bad is seriously fab- I don't usually like series like this but one episode and I was hooked.

Also been watching Misfits recently- sort of superheroes meets skins type drama/ thriller- also very funny in places.

Bodies is very good too- not exactly a thriller but still very dramatic and thrilling (but not if you are squeamish as some of the medical scenes are rather graphic.)

CarelessWispa · 11/03/2012 18:42

Oh, I like the look of 'Bodies' Brigit. Thanks for that.

Do give 'Breaking Bad' a try, Stealthpolarbear. I thought exactly the same thing, and was willing to give up after the first couple of episodes, but then I got immersed in the story and the characters. The plot does sound bizarre, written down, it's true. Now I'm gagging for there to be another series as it's one of the few things DH and I can watch together.

OP posts:
CarelessWispa · 11/03/2012 18:46

Btw, has anyone seen 'In Treatment' starring Gabriel Byrnes. I know not a thriller, but one of my friends raved about it.....

OP posts:
LemonDifficult · 11/03/2012 18:50

Have you seen Murder One? It's a bit dated but DH and I were really engrossed. Our list would be similar to yours (loving Breaking Bad) - Did you catch Six Feet Under? Not a thriller but pretty dark.

knottyhair · 11/03/2012 22:49

Ooh yes I'd second both Bodies and Misfits, defininitely.
