Why is it that everytime I see a delivery in the USA the mothers are led flat on their backs with epidurals in - no wonder they have difficulty in delivery - get up mobilise!!

That should be OBEM

the births seem far more medicalised

what confuses me is are the nurses actually midwives

one episode I saw a mother had a nurse-midwife which they made a big deal about ..so what the heck are all the others there?

Most of them are maternity nurses. The babies are always delivered by the OB-GYNs.

I mentioned before I gave birth to DC1 in the twin hospital to the one shown in the series. The epidural rate there is over 90% and the epidurals are started straight away (at about 3cm).
A lot of births are induced as well. As soon as you reach your due date you get given the option to induce.

and all that suctioning of the newborns is a bit old fashioned
