Good series, real eyeopener.

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 05/03/2012 21:52

42 or 43 suicides/accidental deaths on the London Underground each year.

Another one, now :(

Pinkchampagne · 05/03/2012 22:33

Was really grim viewing.Sad

southeastastra · 06/03/2012 10:07

some of it was cheerful, like the sunset loving pick driver Grin

Mrsjay · 06/03/2012 12:54

Oh it was really gruesome I feel Sad when people fall /jumpunder trains , but i thought the rest of it was quite cheery and the staff all seem great a bit eccentric im guessing thats because they dont see that much daylight Grin I really like programmes like this , However im a bumkin and i will never ever go on a tube in too clautrophobic ,

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 06/03/2012 12:57

The undergrounds are packed most of the time. Unpleasent experience.

I used to work on the underground and truly, it was the best job I ever had. The programme is doing a good job of "telling it like it is".

I had to leave due to relocation but watching the programme (and I know quite a few people featured in it!) has made me miss it a LOT.

Mrsjay · 06/03/2012 13:06

MY Dc have been with a school trip did the sights and shows and used the underground , I would love to go and see a show but i would be too scared to go on the tube , we have been to london once as a familiy we were staying at a campsite in surrey so we got the train in , we walked MILES as i didnt see another way of getting around ,

Kveta · 06/03/2012 13:09

it was a fascinating series. I loved seeing Westbourne Park on TV as used to live very near it! was very strange seeing it on the television!

the one unders were grim. and so sad that even london foxes hate living there so much they jump under trains.

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 06/03/2012 13:10

I lived in LOndon and used the tube a lot. I would love to swork for the London underground.

Visit the Underground website, then vacancies, that's the starting point. Unless it's changed since I worked there (4years ago) you (general) start as a Station Assistant, manning the gates, checking Oyster Cards, platform/general station duties. There is a probationary period, the length of which I forget, after you have passed that, you are able to start applying for other roles like driver, ticket office, revenue protection etc etc.

It really is a very good company to work for, you are well trained (as you would expect being that you have to be ready for ANY eventuality, think 7/7) and well looked after.

True the hours ARE unsociable (up at 3.30am for an early start, late shifts end at 01.00 depending on which station you're at) but I would recommend it to anyone and age CERTAINLY isn't taken into consideration when applying.

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 06/03/2012 13:30

Thank you Shakey :)

I mean high rush hour as a commuter can be unpleasent as squished up and missed stops, because people won't/can't move.

I bet there is a huge waiting list. Working with the public suits me.

This has been a really good series, really interesting to see behind the scenes.

Very sad last night though.

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 06/03/2012 17:35

Yes, the 'suicide pit', the ditch in the tube line.

at the live line, which looks lethal.
