Can't believe it! OK, its' got subtitles and it's not Scandi or deep, but it is very charming in its own way. I especially love the saluting PCs - do they really do that in Sicily?

I started watching it last week and was really enjoying it until my eldest and his 2 sleepover buddies decided to invade the living room! I'm hoping it might be on IPlayer.

It´s very old fashioned somehow & I really don´t like his attitude towards women!

porcamiseria · 18/02/2012 20:04

si , prefer books though !

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 19/02/2012 08:13

I have to catch it on iplayer...

I turned the first episode off as I didn't enjoy it, but have recorded the second one to give it another go and will watch it in the week.

Yes, he does have a terrible attitude to women/ marriage but it isn't meant to be set in 2012 is it? I had it down as about 1980s? Was enjoying the Life on Mars effect of watching policeman who aren't yet online.

Unless there's a kind of very major "Isle-of-Wight effect" when you go over to Sicily from the mainland....like going back 20 years in time (in a good way!)

Pity when I tried to get DD into it, the first thing that happened was a chicken got run over (she's been militantly veggie for a year now) Sad

I have been enjoying it.

I think it's set in the late 1990s e.g. they have mobile phones but not many, and big clunky computer screens on their desks. My impression of Sicily was that it was a bit behind the times, especially compared with Tuscany, but in a nice way.

PricklyThistle · 26/02/2012 00:29

I thought he had a pretty refreshing attitude to women - he's had at least 2 throw themselves at him, and he's politely refused, and helped them. Livia blows a bit hot and cold for my liking!
I've watched all the eps so far, and very much like it. Much better than the stylish but boring and confusing Zen.

We love it here too, although we both feel asleep last night. In my defence, had a really busy day and a full tummy and wine weren't helping.

Hoping to catch up on iplayer later in the week though.

LOVING this - just great!

I also think the attitude towards Women is so much better than the "norm" in police dramas. He seems to genuinely like them, have a laugh and a flirt...

The scenery is beautiful, I also think he is hawt so thumbs up here Grin

mrscynical · 26/02/2012 20:20

My man is Sicilian and he does all those hand gestures and facial expressions. Been there a few times and it is beautiful but it is like going back in time.

Montalbano is very, very sexy and I love that he turns women down and that he is working as honestly as he can within such a corrupt system.

I also love the daft policeman who gets everything wrong.

Wot - how could i have missed this!!!!!!!!!! The books are my favourite ever read - I always pre-order them ages ahead and save them up for my summer hols...
I bought the box set of teh forst series, but not got around to watching it - the pic shows man not like I imagine Montalbano Grin

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 28/02/2012 15:36

thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!! - have now looked at this on bbciplayer - intend to show to DS1 tonight who is studying italian gcse, and its difficult to get subtitled italian stuff. After my initial disappointment that Montalbano did not look how I imagined him in the books, I'm kinda getting used to this one Grin
