Who wants to help?

OP posts:
fivegomadindorset · 27/01/2012 22:13

First series or second?

StealthPolarBear · 27/01/2012 22:21

erm third I think. The one with...
ooh trying not to spoil
the Apartheid stuff

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 27/01/2012 22:22

and I mighrt be overthinking, but the "bad" guy in the end sounded almost demonic, are we expected to see a God/Satan thing?

Panzee · 27/01/2012 22:23

Have you finished it? Everything's answered in it.

StealthPolarBear · 27/01/2012 22:26

Is it though? gene and geeky guy both dead, doomed to spend eternity as police officers, grabbing officers as they die to come and work for them. Neither wants to be alone so they're in this power struggle.

Why did they all have to go in the end? What was the worst that could happen if they all just hung around and raced about in the Quattro/Merc? What was Viv?

OP posts:
Pinot · 27/01/2012 22:28

I don't geddit either

Valpollicella · 27/01/2012 22:38

Nononono. They were there for a reason...to be the coppers they needed to be, and didnt get to while "not" in the 80's...(iyswim)

Once they'd reached their potential, it was time to go....

ClaraDeLaNoche · 27/01/2012 22:40

I wish Gene Hunt would appear in present day time for another series.

Abcinthia · 27/01/2012 22:45

I thought the same as Valpollicella

OracleInaCoracle · 27/01/2012 22:49

what Valpollicella said.

it was a sort of holding room for coppers who went before they reached their potential. geeky bloke was the devil and Gene was a sort of guardian angel.

if they messed up again in afterlife (like viv) or chose to go with him (like Shaz, chris and ray nearly did), geeky guy got them (the screams were other souls, down in hell). when they solved the big case, they were granted peace. hence, going to the pub. then, once they went, Gene was "reset". he himself never let go of the policeman he should have become.

I miss it sooooo much. agree with Clara, it'd be great if they did one last series, in the 90's.

Valpollicella · 27/01/2012 22:53

Virgin Media have the first two series on their 'watch we're watching' downloads at the moment so I am revisiting them Grin

What did Viv do to mess up? I can't remember - was it to do with the prison riot?

VickityBoo · 27/01/2012 22:54

I miss that series. Have never been so hooked on a tv show before. This one had me from the very beginning I was so obsessed! I really miss it in fact.

VickityBoo · 27/01/2012 22:55

So clever the part the theme music had to play too and the occasional Bowie references. So clever.

OracleInaCoracle · 27/01/2012 22:56

yeah, he was given the opportunity to help out his brother by getting guns in. and was killed. hence Gene racing to get to him before demon/devil.

Im going to order the lot I think, only 7.50 each from Amazon!

Valpollicella · 27/01/2012 23:01

Thanks Lissie - haven't re-watched that one yet and couldn't remember the specifics.

I spent aaages trying to decode the number plate of the Quattro as well.

There is a tenous link out there that it is one year, one month and one day after

SPOILER

Valpollicella · 27/01/2012 23:01

Oh

That didn't work very well on my phone

Valpollicella · 27/01/2012 23:03

Scrap that./ I am talking bolly bollocks.

OracleInaCoracle · 27/01/2012 23:03

oooooooo, that would make sense. rewatching life on mars was a revelation, things like the movie posters all provide clues, Chris's ineptness, Ray's anger.... it all makes sense!

Valpollicella · 27/01/2012 23:05

I've seen eps 1-5 of Series 1 again now and there are so many clues, when you know the whole thing.

One comment in one ep to Gene was 'You shouldn't even be here'

His face was a picture - a real moment of him wondering if they knew

iCANdothisiCAN · 28/01/2012 00:11

DH actually spent time with Matthew Graham one of the writers so for once a question I actually can answer!!

Lissielou is pretty much there, geekey guy was indeed the devil, and Gene a kind of Guardian angel although sort of self appointed as he is aware he is dead but still has can't accept it and is trying to compensate for his weaknesses/mistakes in life.

They were all indeed in a kind of purgatory as they had too many unresolved issues in life and couldn't accept dying.

Each major case resonated with one of them in such a way that they came to terms with what had happened and were ready to "let go".

Also in case anyone was wondering, Nelson was St Peter and the pub is the pearly gates Smile

carernotasaint · 28/01/2012 00:45

Just wanted to say i LOVED this show too and Life on Mars. I watched Ashes to Ashes first when it was on TV and then watched Life on Mars on DVD three years ago.
Cant watch Mad Dogs though as i dont have Sky. (sighs)

StealthPolarBear · 28/01/2012 07:37

That makes sense. So it actually ended with them all "dying"?
It does kind of wreck Gene's exasperateness with Alex and with Sam for their ramblings about other worlds. And how come the others never rambled about other worlds?

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 28/01/2012 07:39

oh and so geeky guy got viv :( and that woman who was an undercover officer? He actually killed viv didn't he (tho he was dying)

OP posts:
SweetTheSting · 28/01/2012 07:44

SPB, it's because the others were dead outright but Alex and Sam were in comas and therefore had a chance of going back to their other worlds.

Valpollicella · 28/01/2012 08:56

Also they hadbeen there long enough to forget their alive life-like Gene had as well. Hence no mutterings but just a general unease at some things...Like Ray when he hears the guy playing the tin whistle

Remember that Alex also started to forget things...like who gave her the Rubiks Cube
