Ive just started an AIBU thread about this. Could it paint them in a worse light? Its disgusting.

southeastastra · 19/01/2012 22:53

really saggy? i don't get that from it

and why have you posted another thread? we are discussing it here surely

oreocrumbs · 19/01/2012 22:54

I strayed onto it for a second and saw them trying to break that deer's neck. It was too much, have had to retreat to the cooking channels. I can't stand it.

southeastastra · 19/01/2012 22:55

ha that's sort of ironic, you can watch food being cooked but not where it comes from

ThePathanKhansWitch · 19/01/2012 22:55

Finding it very interesting. I come from a large Irish family, i know a lot of traveling family's, it is a pretty honest portrayal. They are a bit of a law unto themselves. Very generous, gregarious but still very much a closed shop.

I was talking to a cousin recently, he'd been invited to a wedding, i asked if many Irish travellers married "out" and he said "no way, they come to England if necessary and marry an English traveller".

thenightsky · 19/01/2012 22:57

Someone should tell them that hunting with dogs is illegal.

OP posts:
ThePathanKhansWitch · 19/01/2012 23:02

Yes indeed. perhaps my local huntsmaster Hmm on no thats right he uses them too....

oreocrumbs · 19/01/2012 23:03

I'm fairly sure the meat that they are cooking on the food network wasn't hunted with dogs, but I take your point it is ironic Smile

GoingForGoalWeight · 19/01/2012 23:07

One guy had a glass repeatedly smashed in his eye. I am sure this kind of programme gives some ideas. Needless violence on television..again.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 19/01/2012 23:10

I'm sure it doesn't Going, hate to say it, but this horrible kind of violence happens in most big cities at the weekend.

brandysoakedbitch · 19/01/2012 23:12

I just cannot understand why anyone would think it is about them being painted ina bad lightm it is their way of life, it does not affect you. My experience of Irish travellers local to me is that they are chancers, do a lot of pony racing (and hold up the traffic!) but they do no harm to my life. Let them get on with it - I am not a fan of coursing etc but live and let live say. I think this programme is a fascinating look at the relationships between men and their sons and wider family. Their honour is so highly prized that seemingly they will defend it with their lives. Good to see children experiencing something a bit wild and dangerous but protected by their Fathers

ThePathanKhansWitch · 19/01/2012 23:15

Their children are very healthy, lovely outdoor life, and so confident i will probably spend squillions on clubs trying to get a little confidence into my child.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 19/01/2012 23:15

I started my thread at the same time as this one began. Id looked for a thread about this and couldnt find one.

southeastastra · 19/01/2012 23:17

oh sorry then saggy

GoingForGoalWeight · 19/01/2012 23:25

I think it doers give people/kids ideas.
You're not mental are ya? cry and I'll give you something to cry for. That was said by the little boys' Father in the back of the car. That little boy is damaged for life with that kind of talk.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 19/01/2012 23:27

What about when he called the toddler a cunt?!!

thenightsky · 19/01/2012 23:28

How can a baby be born with a black eye?

OP posts:
GoingForGoalWeight · 19/01/2012 23:34

I missed that bit Saggy. I think it shows they're a bit 'lacking'. Where are Social Services, why aren't they intervening? It is child abuse. Culture my arse. I had gypsy neighbours andthey were lovely, clean people, but I still do not see how their way of treating children on this programme is anything but abuse. No, I don't understand how they're alpowed to do this. Someone somewhere must notice - teachers at school etc

spingey · 19/01/2012 23:51

They do live such differnt lives to us, almost old fashioned in many ways. It was very interesting but very graphic. I could just about cope with the dogs killing the animals but the two lads fighting at the end was pretty hard to stomache. They were only about 7 and even though they had gloves on they were battering one another!!! Was awful and went on for ages.

pigletmania · 20/01/2012 10:45

I agree its Shock and disgusting, especially watching very young children fighting. I just started a thread in AIBU too its horrid.
