Boardwalk Empire - what has Van Alden done?

I know he was doing something dodgy to support his wife and Lucy and was expecting to pay Lucy 3,000 dollars for the baby.

But what was it and why did it go wrong? I must have missed something. Was he taking bribes and if so, from whom? How did his junior, the one who was burned in the explosion, realise?

the junior saw him (or thought he did) 'checking' the money when he had no need to be near it. then he offered to take the money & got told 'no' & looked a bit suspicious.

van alden has been buying info from one of the criminals, then setting up a raid, taking the money & keeping some of it for himself instead of declaring it.

Did Nucky know about Van Alden's dodginess? It appeared that way in the last episode - when he offered to pay for Lucy and the baby in return for Van Alden spying on Esther, Nucky said something that suggested to me that he knew.

not sure - there's never been a direct show of that. but van alden just having a kid with her would be enough to get him sacked, so could explain that
