Is everyone else loving Bleak House as much as I am?

Burn Gorman (Guppy) has got to be find of the year. The scene between him and Lady Dedlock (an awe-inspiring bit of acting from Gillian Anderson) was the best thing I've seen on TV for many a long year

I am enjoying it although I keep forgetting who is who - terrible considering I've read the bloody book! ( years ago though, that's my excuse anyway). I agree Gillian Anderson is brilliant - she oozes boredom and quiet frustration. Tulkinghorn is also v good IMO.

yes it's marvellous, I wish it was an hour per ep instead of 30 mins though. I am utterly engrossed and then suddenly it's over.

thinking of dusting off my copy of the book now!

Eowyn · 12/11/2005 14:41

Hello, I love it too. Was thinking if Gillian Anderson & Charles Dance made babies they'd be very interesting looking - i mean in the meaningful, heavily lidded looks department. or something. Think the make-up artists are having a fabulous time.

It's my favourite Dickens novel but I'm finding it rather hard to follow the plot in the t.v. adaptation. I'm loving the character acting though , fabulous all round. I also wish it was an hour an episode, or even two!

spacedonkey · 15/11/2005 16:12

If you prefer to watch both episodes in a one hour block, an omnibus edition is shown on BBC1 on Sunday afternoon

I missed a chunk of this last night - did Guppy kill Jonny Vegas? And who has actually got the letters?
Loved Esther last night "My face was never my fortune" blub!

spacedonkey · 18/11/2005 15:06

No, Krook spontaneously combusted!

We don't know if the letters were burned or not. Smallweed has claimed Krook's property, so Guppy can't get at the letters.

Is it really supposed to be a mystery as to who Esther's parents are? Is it more subtle in the book?

spacedonkey · 18/11/2005 15:13

It's not supposed to be a mystery to the viewer is it? The suspense comes from wondering what will happen when the truth comes out - what will happen to Esther, and Lady Dedlock?

OP posts:
cupcakes · 18/11/2005 15:19

That's alright then. I hoped it wasn't supposed to be a mystery to the audience - it's hitting us over the head with a hammer!
I don't find it very suspenseful (?) but it is engrossing. I like the Hugo Speers character.

RTKangaMummy · 18/11/2005 23:09

I think it is deffo brill too

spacedonkey · 25/11/2005 12:45

Anyone else blub when Lady Dedlock told Esther the truth?

Amazing acting from both of them

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 25/11/2005 12:48

Yes, I did.

Found the dialogue a bit hammy though ("we have all the time in the world").

RTKangaMummy · 25/11/2005 12:48

I watched recording of it this morning and is true escapism

really brill

TurqtheHeraldAngelsSing · 16/12/2005 21:31

So sad this has finished. Loved Sheila Hancock tonight, and Guppy.
Hurrah it's being repeated on BBC4 because I missed a couple of chunks.

Reindior · 16/12/2005 21:33

I loved it too...

I thought Guppy was amazingly acted.

CaRowlers · 16/12/2005 22:02

I too have thoroughly enjoyed it.
I've just looked on the website for the programme and was shocked by how many characters I had forgotton.
I loved Dennis Lawson though. Amd Smallweed chap - don't know the actor but yuk, he played him brilliantly.

spacedonkey · 17/12/2005 13:49

Absolutely the best thing I've seen on TV for years

Sir Leicester at Lady Dedlock's grave made me blub terribly last night

OP posts:
Reindior · 17/12/2005 16:00

Yes, it was moving wasn't it...and yet so unnecessary. If only Lady D had trusted in her dh's love, she could have had him, and her daughter.

Linnet · 17/12/2005 22:22

Can anybody tell me what happened to Lady Deadlock? I was out on Thursday night and I missed it, we don't have a video so couldn't tape it, saw last nights episode so saw the ending, but please please tell me what happened to Lady Deadlock?

Reindior · 18/12/2005 18:53

She left so as not to cause her dh any embarrassment. She sent a goodbye letter to Esther, and they all hoofed it to try and find her. She was found eventually at the cemetry where Nemo was buried, and she was dead. Really sad...
