Real Families, ITV1's reliably good strand of what newspapers would call "human interest" stories, continues with snapshots of relationships that, each in their own way, are very affecting. Take Dave and Sam, a married couple with two children. Dave confessed his homosexuality to his wife, but such is their love, she refused to judge him harshly and the pair live an apparently happy, though celibate, married life. At the other end of the scale of what one woman describes as an "awful betrayal" are Katie and Kevin. Two years after they were married, Kevin outed himself to his unsuspecting wife and left, eventually to set up home with another man. But Katie has found it far less easy to move on. She is tormented with what is, effectively, grief for a love she had expected to endure. Her pain, even through a television screen, is tangible.
