I saw it.

I feel oddly sad, at the end of it all... Also rather let down; the ad made it out to be a bit more of a thriller, or at least something a tad more dramatic and twisty that what it was.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it. I was gripped in most places, not quite edge-of-my-seat, but was definitely invested in the story. It just made me sad. Not buckets of tears sad, more that I felt really sorry for Angela, and was a little disconcerted at the ease in which she lied, and the level she went to to tell those lies (extra phones, 15 fb accounts etc - these weren't just off-the-cuff lies, it was a proper web she had constructed, starting before she even started talking to Nev.)

Also, not sure if I'm over-reacting, but I was a little uncomfortable with the camera angle of the interview with the young girl; Abby's friend. Seemed a little (lot) inappropriate to me. I might just be a bit of a cynic though...

sharbie · 04/05/2011 07:55

wiki says it was called a fake - i suppose there are a few things that didn't really add up for me ie uncollected post (surely that would have come up in texts/conversation) also when they drove up to farm at 2.30 am - what would they have done if someone was there while they were peering through windows? good story though - v moving in a way.yh i agree too about the camera angle and most hidden camera footage i have seen wasn't as clear as what they had shot.

I really liked it, I felt incredibley sad for Angela though.

clangermum · 04/05/2011 13:44

I'm confused - are they saying the documentary itself was a fake?

I nearly turned off after 20 minutes and then it started going in a different direction and I was hooked.

I wasn't sure about Angela's husband - at first I thought he was a bit slow, that he really believed his wife was selling her work, and maybe he didn't ever pick up the phone or see what she was up to online (the latter wouldn't make him that unusual). But the documentary title refers to something he said which seemed really on the money. Was it just a random story he came out with unknowingly (maybe they filmed him for hours on end and he came up with loads of odd comments?), and they thought it suited the situation, or was he actually pointing out his wife was like the catfish? Just couldn't figure it out.

Very unusual story and it felt quite sinister at times, then just plain sad at others.

I didn't like it when he asked Angela to talk to him in the daughter's voice. Too creepy.

BitOfFun · 04/05/2011 13:49

I only saw two minutes before I nodded off. Was it a film pretending to be a documentary then? Describe it to me if you don't mind, please?

clangermum · 04/05/2011 14:42

Guy gets sent a painting (supposedly by an 8 year old) after she sees one of his photographs of dancers in a publication. Photographer shares office space with his brother and a friend, they're into making films, and after he receives a few more paintings they brother/friend suggest they start filming how this thing evolves as a documentary, supposedly because it's a quirky thing, one of those unlikely (!) relationships that springs up via facebook etc, because the paintings are good for an 8 year old and he's starting to 'meet' the 8 year old's family and friends online. And it takes off from there....

clangermum · 04/05/2011 14:43

But now I don't know if this is what it is at all!

BitOfFun · 04/05/2011 15:15

Ah ok, thanks. And let me guess- it turns out to be a hairy handed trucker? Grin

clangermum · 04/05/2011 16:48

that would have been funny - but it ended up a bit more twisted/sad than that

couldn't get to sleep for ages afterwards, and it ended way past my bedtime too Grin

what I liked about it was that as time went on, we were sitting there coming up with different theories just as the photographer was trying to piece it all together - there wasn't just one 'reveal' moment. Even the end credits were revealing things.

so worth watching if it's on catch-up and anyone's interested - we possibly haven't given too much away

BitOfFun · 04/05/2011 17:04

I'll give it another go then, thanks Smile

sharbie · 04/05/2011 17:13

i agree clanger v thought provoking and def worth watching

i think wiki was indeed saying whole thing might have been fake - there were a few holes in the story and yes fwiw i think the husband did think angela was the catfish

I've just watched it. Felt really sorry for Angela at the end of it. Her life must be pretty sad for her to want to create a whole new persona.

Makes you wonder about some trolls on here tbh, because that is mainly what she was wasn't it.

kitkatya · 05/05/2011 17:45

Ive watched the first ten minutes, should I carry on or delete?

If the whole thing was a fake then I really dont think I can be bothered.

sharbie · 05/05/2011 17:45

def worth watching not sure it was a fake

I'm soo pissed off I missed this :(

any repeats?

clangermum · 06/05/2011 17:35

Sue - maybe it's on 4OD?

SueSylvesterforPM · 06/05/2011 18:16

Oo not thought of that?

phonemonkey · 07/05/2011 21:53

It wasn't a fake. Danny Boyle congratulated the film makers at an award ceremony on their great "mockumentary" but they maintain that they just got very lucky that it evolved into such a weird story while they were making it. Very strange film though.

doings · 09/05/2011 10:18

I thoroughly enjoyed the film. From a dramatic point of view, I thought it moved along at a pace, all the lads were very likeable and the tension build-up to what or who was Angela/Abby/Megan was great. Thought ending was full of pathos but kindness too.

I'd have any of the three guys at the drop of a hat. . . off to set up fb account. . . .

kitkatya · 09/05/2011 15:42

how hot were they? Sadat the point when they laughed because he'd been making out with a FORTY year old. Bloody charming, Id show him a thing or two!!

I enjoyed it but to be it was a set up. How did they get permission to film them all as it went along? It was very sad.

kitkatya · 09/05/2011 15:56

Ive just rewound to the bit where he was talking to her friend on the stairs. I get what you mean about the angle but, I never noticed the first time around. She reminded me of my chubby 9 year old niece who would also sit like that legs akimbo whilst talking to you. I think it would have looked worse to pull her up on it tbh. Its a shame to burst their innocence.

Yes, I enjoyed it but, it wont be disturbing my sleep!! Smile
